Cc postcard report

2. Research
Concept:
My message is to bring the telling of street and social history
through the use of caricatures. All those artwork involved in creating the
fabulous dioramas depicting scenes of life. My main audience would be
the local and also tourists so that they would more understand about the
background, the history and the story telling behind the arts. It would
also educate them the importance of preserving culture. The photos I took
emphasizing the art that can be seen along the Armenian street. I had
divided ten of my postcards into few categories, the street art, mural art
and the artwork of the local by the Armenian Street. These photos are
taken straight away to the main point, and some of the photos had been
edited into black and white, while the focusing point will still remain
colour.
Theme:
Malaysian Architecture
The theme I have chosen is Malaysian Architecture. The reason I
have chosen this theme is because Penang is a city that bears a rich
history with its well-preserved architecture and cultural traditions. The
island manages to embrace modernity while retaining its colonial
traditions; due to its well-preserved heritage buildings. The city is a
mainstay on the Malaysian tourist scene yet it is also a popular expat
enclave. Therefore, it is definitely a great place to explore the culture of
the place and its architecture background.
3. Summary of Research
First Phase:
02.05.2014
I did some online searching looking for some interest places in Malaysia.
I started to consider whether which theme is better for me to explore. I jot
down the locations in my mind, which is Ipoh, Melaka and Penang as
three of these states is Malaysia’s most tourist-visited destination. But at
last, I chose Penang because it is my hometown and I wish to explore
more about my hometown culture. I do a lot of research about Penang
and at last I chose to focus on the capital of Penang Island, Georgetown. I
mapped out the location and rationale to be presented to my tutor.
Second Phase:
06.05.2014
I went back to my hometown. I spent whole day from morning until
evening, walking around the street at Georgetown, taking photos to find
inspiration whether which theme to choose. I downloaded photoshop and
I learned some basic skills of it through friends. I edited photos which I
feel suitable to use as postcards and I show it to my lecturer during
tutorial class. I gain knowledge and advices and I decided to change my
theme after the tutorial.
Third Phase
29.05.2014
I have chosen another style of photos and ask for my lecturer’s opinion. I
edited my photo using photoshop again, emphasizing the main point of
my photo to make it look nicer. I started to do some research for the
design of the postcard and its packaging. I also try asking about the
workshop nearby to print the postcards.
4. Mapping of Georgetown and its History
Georgetown is situated in Pulau Pinang, Malaysia, its geographical
coordinates are 5° 25' 0" North, 100° 20' 0" East and its original name
(with diacritics) is George Town.
History
Georgetown, the capital of the island Penang, is named after the British
King George III. The city is located at the northeast side of the island and
has, suburbs included, about 550.000 inhabitants. After Penang was
handed over by the sultan of Kedah to the English, Sir Francis Light
founded the city Georgetown. He immediately started the construction of
Fort Cornwallis. Over the years this first settlement evolved into a big
city (in that time). In 1957 Georgetown got permission to be called a city
and until 1972 it was the only city in Malaysia with this permission.
5. Draft Photos and Layout Planning
Postcard Back Layout
The photo at the left hand side is the template of my postcard. I edited my
photo and blend it together with the template, as my back layout of my
postcards. I chose this photo because it indicated 10 of my postcards are taken at
the street called Armenian Street. I used the same photo for all these 10 photos
with different quote that presents in the backside of the postcards.
Postcard Front Layout
These are two examples of my front layout. I chose the design of fading
the colour of those art picture, make it looks 3D and make the blackground black
and white while emphasizing the main character. Since I took all my photos by
only phone, so Im just focus on editing my photo simple and nice, rather than
over edited.
6. Packaging Design
These are the design of my packaging, using black and white colour as
theme and briefly explain my theme in the inner part.
These are the photos of my packaging after folding it. The left hand side
photo is the outer part of my packaging and the right hand side photo is
the inner part.
7. I designed my packaging in the simple way, it is just like a drawer,
simply pull it out and u may straight away take out the postcards.
Final Selection of Photos
8. These are 10 of my postcards that I have done. I divide it into categories
so u may see the common and difference betweern the art of mural and
the local’s work and how they related to Malaysian Architecture.
