The Young Lincoln Statue depicts Abraham Lincoln seated on an oak log with an axe at his feet and a book by his knee, representing his discovery of manual labor and statesmanship. The inscription is a 1865 poem by James Russell Lowell praising Lincoln for embodying the spirit of the American West. The monument was intended to show how Americans had developed a unique identity and way of life separate from Europe and Asia. The statue was sculpted between 1920-1950 by British-born American Bryant Baker, who is known for his sculptures of famous Americans including five U.S. presidents.
