Looking at the subject of this presentation “Technology in Learning: Current trends and future trends” – key word here is ‘Trends’. A simple definition of this may be:“A general direction in which something is developing or changing”.This presentation gives us a good opportunity to take the time to stop, reflect on where we have come from, see what is happening now and try to predict where Learning Technology is going. But more importantly, how can we keep up and take advantage?
iPods gave birth to podcasts – many of these available on iTunes, or even companies websites.Social Media – Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube – introduced Social Media Learning – Providing another way to collaborate.Original mobile phones didn’t take off using the web, however, the introduction of Smart Phones brought a huge rise in mobile learning (m-learning).
Microsoft Kinnectwill introduce gesture based learning – example uses - Stroke Rehabilitation, hand signals for flight staffAugmented Reality – although seen as a gimic – (for example the Lynx publicity stunt - Angel) can be used to see 3D models from different directions, animate sections or see how it looks in different colours.Siri – Although we’ve had voice recognition and Artificial Intelligence for a while, the iPhone has brought it to the masses will allow infinite number of possibilities for learners. If you don’t know something, ask your mobile and hopefully you will get a decent response. Although, it’s not there yet... The above are just examples of future technology. Other examples include:Rise in tablets
Currently we have an emphasis on Push Learning:For example, the learner may be asked to attend a “Managing Performance Course”.This is good for mandatory training or for ensuring the learner has ‘seen’ the information – i.e. Tick box coursesBut the learner may not need it yet, they may not have any prior experiences to relate to – or may not have any desire. Therefore the retention may be low.
Although the push learning will be there – especially on Mandatory courses, there will be a stronger emphasis on Pull Learning. This is when the learner will request the information they need – this can commonly be done via a search engine such as GoogleThe benefits of this is that it will be motivation led, they have a desire for this information and will more than likely apply this within a short amount of time – helping the memory retention. However, this type of learning is harder to track and report back to HR/Management for ROI purposes.
So, we’ve looked at the current trends in both Learning and Technology – but what does this mean for the Learner – what will we notice with them?
Seen trends in learning, seen trends in technologyFree – if the learner wants to know something, they are finding it more and more easy to access – via the internet, on their mobile. Higher Expectations - They are used to taking a photo on their mobile which magically appears on their computer at home. Why shouldn’t their learning be like this? If they have the choice to do it when they want and how they want, they will be more motivatedHands-on – New devices will allow for cheaper simulators and will be available to more people. New technology will allow them to explore, experience, they will push buttons they shouldn’t and push things to the max. For example – car simulators will show you what happens if you leave off the EPS. Technology can have a reset button and should allow this. Experience is a great way to learn.
Advancements in Learning Technology will have an effect on the person designing the learning.
Bite Sized Chunks – Develop learning in small 15 – 30 minute manageable chunks that allow someone to pick up and use when neededScenario Based - Put the end first – This is taking the conventional model and reversing it – give the users a scenario and leave them with the tools to figure it out. It’s how we learn in real life, and advancements in technology allow this.Hands on experience – as in the previous slide, allow people to push the wrong button, say the wrong thing or enter the wrong data. Game based learningConsider Technology - Remember, what you chose will need to fit onto the device – we will still have large screens as well as mobile screens
So, once the designer has picked the learning experience, how can we make sure it is delivered properly to the learner?
Develop for multiple devices – Learners will want to start their e-learning on their computer at work, then maybe read some tweets about it on the way home on the train, then pick up the same module where they left off on their iPad at home. Products like Netflix allow you to do this already.Invisible LMS – Learners won’t need to see the LMS – learning will be accessed where and how the user wants. The user will still need to be able to ‘log in’ and be tracked for audits and reports. This could be done via single sign on (appearing with google, twitter, facebook) and potentially can be done via the camera recognition on the devices. Reporting will be simple, for example – The Learner – completed – Appraisal 101 – on their – Mobile Device – on – 6th Sept 2012 at 14.50. Closer link with the designer – ensure keep simple. Each point in the previous slide needs to be kept.
So, what does this mean for the Company
Open policy - BYOD – Bring your own device – more common. Offer devices to those without - + training.Learning Path will be more important – although a learner will have more resources available to them, they will have more distractions. Be clear on mandatory and optional parts Provide training on the devices – some may not take to how it all goes – think about what would benefit them and sell this.Sell the benefits – More hands on, higher motivation, re-usable learning chunks – sharable.May not want to attend conferences / events – may want to follow twitter or webinar of the event instead. - freedom
