Employment history:
2015 to current and 2005 to 2014 – Teacher of Music / Acting Head of Department
Allestree Woodlands School, Derby
Joined the school in September 2005 while completing the Graduate Teacher Programme
(GTP). On completion of the course achieved Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and was
employed by the school as a music teacher.
Acting head of the music department, for two full academic years covering two periods of
maternity leave, from 2006 to 2007 and from 2008 to 2009. Whilst undertaking this role
developed a range of skills over and above the requirements of normal teaching practice:-
- Managing the music department.
- Co-ordinating and managing the departmental budget, including successful pitching
for funds.
- Production, development and modification of departmental schemes of work.
- Communicating and liaising with AQA and Edexcel examining boards to ensure the
meeting of criteria for submission of student work.
- Organising, developing and delivering the GCSE and A Level music courses.
- Responsibility for ensuring department was fully prepared for Ofsted inspection.
- Responsibility for liaising with and deployment of peripatetic instrumental teachers
within the school.
- Planning, organising and presenting school performances.
Other skills developed as part of normal teaching role include:
- Creating original educational resources using a variety of multimedia methods.
- Liaising effectively with agencies, the wider community and parents.
- Target setting through data analysis.
- Understanding and adapting to changes in assessment requirements to ensure
effective and accurate provision of KS3 and KS4 material.
- Training in and understanding legal matters relating to child protection.
- ICT skills.
- Training in and understanding of health and safety issues.
- Report writing.
- Presenting to a range of audiences.
- Professional development record keeping.
- Organising performances at school and in the wider community.
In September 2014 took a career break for one year in order to travel with my partner in
Australia, New Zealand and South-east Asia.

2002 to 2005 – Teacher of Music and Teaching Assistant
Lees Brook Community School, Derby
 Worked as a Classroom Support Assistant in a range of departments within the
school.
 Undertook the GTP in 2004 with support from the school, working as a classroom
music teacher creating a detailed portfolio evidencing all QTS skills used as
assessment on completion of the course.
 During this period was seconded to DaVinci College, Derby to work as acting head
of department for six months.

Interests and hobbies:
Multi instrumentalist musician specialising in violin and saxophone. Toured extensively in
Europe, Mexico and Cuba, and worked with musicians from all over the world.
Currently song writing for a series of projects in Derby.
Capoeira – Brazilian martial art. 15 years experience. Currently a member of Cordao de
Ouro, Derby.
Other activity interests include:- trekking, running, scuba diving, free diving cricket (former
Lancashire Schoolboys). Advanced open water level in scuba diving. Certified freediver.
Conservation and wildlife – Llifelong passion for natural history, especially seabirds and
primates. Travelled extensively since 1987, with recent trips to Gunung Palung and
Tanjung Puting in Indonesian Borneo, and Yala National Park in Sri Lanka, focusing on
indigenous wildlife.
