Andrew Khoury
Andrew Khoury is a Charleston, South Carolina-based graduate
student who is working toward a master’s in exercise physiology
at the Citadel. A cardiac rehabilitation therapist with Roper Saint
Francis, also in Charleston, South Carolina, Andrew Khoury assists
post-heart attack and post-surgery patients and is responsible
for designing exercise programs.
The recovery process after a heart attack is often lengthy and
typically involves changing diet, taking medications, and starting
a regular exercise routine. Most people are discharged within a
week of a cardiac event, and much of the burden of this work falls
on the individual. However, a trained rehab clinician, providing
regular supervision, can have a significant impact.
The typical exercise rehab session starts with five or 10 minutes
of warm-up, followed by a conditioning phase that lasts 20 or
more minutes. This phase often involves aerobic activities such as
cycling, rowing, swimming, and stair climbing, or a simple brisk
walk outdoors. Finally, there is a cool-down phase that lasts from
five to 10 minutes.
Cardiac rehabilitation varies from person to person in terms of
recommended intensity, amount, and duration of the workout,
and it must take into consideration the patient's physical
limitations. A basic physical rehab plan will incorporate exercise
three to five times per week.
