The American scientist David Merrell, in

3. Obviously, in the scientific world there
were premises for links between the
environment and personal development,
but Merrell conducted a very interesting
experiment that shows how significant
the impact of the environment on the
development of the individual.
Merrell divided a group of guinea pigs
into 3 units.
The task that each unit had to fulfill was
to cross a maze to reach the food.
Unit 1 did this in an average of 15
minutes for each guinea pig, without
being influenced in any way by the
external environment.
Unit 2 of the guinea pigs was held for a

4. week, ten hours a day, in an environment
where the researcher played Mozart's
music.
The mice from unit 2 managed to
shorten the way through the maze by 8
minutes on average.
Finally, unit 3 lived for a week in a
laboratory where he listened to hard
rock music for 10 hours a day.
This unit needed up to 30 minutes more
to traverse the maze than unit 1 (which
traversed the maze without being
exposed to any music).
Merrell wanted to complete the
experiment, bringing all the units
together in a few months to see how the
guinea pigs behaved together.

5. Surprisingly, however, the experiment
could not be completed because the
guinea pigs from Unit 3 "hard rock"
killed each other in the meantime.
The value of this scientific discovery in
personal development lies in
determining the profound impact that a
single determining element of the
external environment can have on the
behavior, performance and even
existence of individuals.
In their attempt to bring science and
personal development in line,
researchers around the world are
intensely investigating the effects that
one element or another can have on the
human psyche and personality, given
that we do not yet know the full range of
functionality and full potential of the

What does Merrell's experiment teach us
about personal development?
Obviously, not listening to classical
music non-stop does us good while hard
rock music hurts us.
The important lesson for personal
development is that long-term exposure
to a certain environment radically
changes an individual's behavior and
functioning (contrary to the
psychological law of repeatedly applied
stimuli) and that flexibility, change and
adaptability are necessary ingredients in
the personal development of each of us.
In other words, as a more amusing

their limits and become more efficient
and effective, scientific discoveries in
personal development teach us that it is
okay to be a fan of hard rock music, as
long as you have an open mind and
