Johnny Appleseed, whose real name was John Chapman, was an American pioneer nurseryman who introduced apple trees to large parts of Pennsylvania, Ontario, Ohio, and Indiana in the early 19th century. He became an American legend for his erratic travels and pioneering methods of nursery establishment along the Pennsylvania and Ohio frontiers. Johnny Appleseed helped establish apple trees as an important agricultural crop in those regions and earned his living by selling bushels of apple seedlings and the cider produced from apples.
