Undergraduate admissions at Georgetown
Graduate admissions & career in health care (and children)
Started my practice in 2007
Started at Seacrest in 2010
● Three children graduated
● One to go!
Two children served as internship guinea pigs

The Syllabus
5. 1. Bad grammar
2.Are YOU doing what you envisioned yourself
doing at age 16 or 17?
@HECAtweets #HECA17
“What are you majoring in?”
Good at math = Engineer
Good at science = Pre-med
Likes animals = Pre-vet
Likes art = Art School (yikes!)
Good at English = Humanities
Want to make money and don’t
like anything else = Business

Summer programs are great, but...
Not everyone can afford a summer program, and
many are simply “pay to play”
Other schools in my area ran “senior projects” at
the end of the year, but these weren’t really going
to suit this purpose
8. Equally important, an internship...
○ Builds resumé
○ Teaches interview, phone, and cover letter-
writing skills
○ Exposes students to professional work
environments
○ Promotes accountability and independence
@HECAtweets #HECA17
The Solution: Internships!
Allows students to explore their majors and
career interests ahead of time
10. Started the program at Seacrest
Informal and optional—if a kid was interested,
we worked with him or her
Started building community connections and
brought speakers on campus
● Beware of horn tooting!

In The Beginning
More of a “fun” experience
11. @HECAtweets #HECA17
● Interest inventory
● Resume
● Cover letter
● Email series
● Interview
● Schedule the internship
● Complete the internship
● Get feedback from community partner
● Summarize
● Project presentation
○ Invite your juniors and sophomores
○ Gives younger students ideas about
internships they might complete
The Essential Elements
12. ● Glorified “take your kid to work” day
○ Students just follow professionals
around for a few days
○ Passive, boring, and does not require
engagement
○ No initiative on the student’s part
● Exceptions: shadowing nurses and doctors
○ Watching surgeries is different than
watching a banker count money
@HECAtweets #HECA17
Beware of Job Shadowing
13. Do NOT let your student wait until Senior
Spring to start an internship!
Timing is Everything
Post-application season (traditional “senior
project” time), seniors are checked out and
unmotivated
Additionally:
● Colleges won’t get to hear about it
● No time to re-group for students who discover
they don’t like that particular field
● Many businesses need more help in
winter than in spring
@HECAtweets #HECA17
14. Why so early?
● Doesn’t interfere with college applications
or interviews
● Allows students plenty of time to research
and arrange the internship
● Gives students the option of summer
internships
○ Good for athletes or other students who
may be busy during spring, fall, and
winter
@HECAtweets #HECA17
Timing is Everything
Sweet spot: Winter of Junior year
16. ● Choose just a few motivated kids
● Force them to take the steps
○ Initial research
○ Resume
○ Reaching out to community partners
○ Interview
● Even if they don’t get the internship, it’s
still a valuable experience!
@HECAtweets #HECA17
Start Small
17. ● Network!
● Use your client list
● Chamber of Commerce
● Visit Career Fairs (CareerQuest)
● Smaller, local businesses are more flexible
● Think outside the box! You won’t
believe how much is out there
● Suggestions:
○ Local non-profits, doctors, physical therapists, veterinarians,
local zoo, wildlife refuge, animal rescue, community theaters,
museums, galleries, radio stations, recording studios,
large churches with sound systems, police stations,
forensic labs, environmental agencies, hospitality,
CPA firms, plant nurseries

Build a Community Partner
Database
19. @HECAtweets #HECA17
The more sponsors you involve, the more
exposure your business will have.
You will expand your presence in the
community, attract new clients, and help your
current client base be more successful.
Your students will grow, too, as they learn
how to make informed and mature decisions
about their majors and careers (and the rest
of the college process).
How Will This Help Me Grow?
20. @HECAtweets #HECA17
There are many options:
● Include it in your (more expensive) package
● Offer it as an add-on
● Offer it as a stand-alone
● Offer it at an hourly rate
How Do I Charge for This?
21. I try to conduct as many site visits as I can
I always speak with the internship sponsors if I
don’t know them personally…
BUT I put the responsibility for final permission
on the parent
I do not promise or guarantee anything about
the experience
@HECAtweets #HECA17
Cover Your Bases
23. @HECAtweets #HECA17
1. Better organization
● Start even sooner
● Explore interest as freshmen, develop
interests as sophomores, perhaps land
summer internships before junior year
2. Better network of sponsors
3. Increased depth
● Push interests toward something deeper
● Research, publication, etc.
What do I envision for the future?
