McKinsey 7S Framework - Overview
The Model was developed in the late 1970’s by Tom Peters and Robert Waterman, former consultants at McKinsey and Company. It identifies 7 elements of
an organization that need to align for it to be successful.
Strategy
Structure
Skills
Systems
Style
Staff
Shared
Values
Long term plan for building and maintaining
a competitive advantage over its
competitors
Corporate hierarchy and critical business
units
The daily activities and procedures in place
to achieve business outcomes
Leadership and Management style adopted
General capabilities of the staff
Competencies and technical capabilities of
the staff
Shared Values: Core values of the company that reflects general work ethics
The placement of shared values in the center emphasizes that these are central to the development of all the other critical elements.
Soft Elements: Harder to describe and more influenced by company culture
Hard Elements: Easy to identify and can be influenced by management

How To Use It?
To apply the McKinsey 7S Model in your organization, following steps are suggestive:
Step 2
Hard Elements – your strategy, structure and systems. How well does each one support the others?
Step 3
Soft Elements – skills, style, and staff. Do they support the desired hard elements? Do they support one another? If not,
what needs to change?
Step 1
Begin with Shared Values: are they consistent with your hard elements? If not, what needs to change?
As you move ahead to adjust and align the elements, you'll need to use an sequential (and often time-consuming)
process of making adjustments, and then re-analyzing it’s effects on each of the elements.

achieve our objectives?
