3. Words between subjects and verb
Words that come between the subject and the
verb don’t change subject-verb agreement.
Examples
1. The lumpy salt in the shakers needs to be
changed.
2. An old chair with broken legs has sat in our
basement for years.
4. Verb before subject
A verb agrees with its subject when the verb
comes before the subject. Words that may precede
the subject include there, here, and , in questions
what and where.
Examples
1. There are wild dogs in our neighborhood.
2. In the distance was a billow of black smoke.
5. Compound Subjects
A compound subject is two subjects separated by a
joining word, such as and.
subject joined by and generally take a plural verb.
Example :- Ali and Aliya are a contended couple.
When subject are joined by either … or, neither …
nor, not only … but also, the verb agrees with the
subject closer to the verb.
Example :- Neither the negotiator nor the union
leaders want the strike continue.
