4. World’s No. 1 cereal food.
Rice (Oryza Sativa) is the seed of the grass
species monocot plants.
As a cereal grain, it is the most widely
consumed staple food for a large part of the
world's human population, especially
in Asia and Africa.
7. Rice straw is a waste material of rice plant, produced
during harvesting.
It is a rich source of carbon with a high content of
cellulose(32%-47%), hemicellulose (19%–27%), and
lignin(15%–24%).
It is an important source of livestock feed for large
ruminants.
1 ton of paddy crop produces 290 kg straw &290 kg straw
can produce 100 kWh of power.
8. Some useful applications of rice straw are as:
1. Organic fertilizer 2. Animal fodder
3. Soil mulching 4. Wood and paper industry
5. Source of energy(Bio gas, Ethanol & Hydrogen)6. Mushroom production
7. Packing material 8. Briquettes
9.Ropes production 10.Vermi compos production
The high content of silica in rice straw limits its direct application as
animal fodder, in papermaking and as a solid fuel.
9.
10. Husk are generated during the first stage of rice
milling, when rough/ brown rice and paddy rice is
husked and the grains are threshed.
The main components of rice husk are silica (18%–
22%),cellulose (28%–38%), hemicellulose (28%), and
lignin (9%–20%).
11. Rice husk is mostly used as boiler feed for the generation
of steam.
Used as fuel in brick kilns, roadside dhabas or hous
chulhas.
Used for the manufacturing of huskbrickets, huskboards
soil mulch, animal feed, and poultry litter.
Also used for producing sodium silicate, activated
carbon and for furfural (widely use in pharmaceutica
industry).
Bioethanol are also produced from it.
12.
13. Upon burning, rice husk leaves a residue called rice
husk ash (RHA).
It contains 87%–97% silica.
Pure amorphous silica can be produced from it.
14. Amorphous silica produced from RHA is used in the
rubber industry as a reinforcing agent.
Can be used as insulation cover for steel ingots.
Can be used as abrasives in metal cleaning.
Can be used as a soil amendment and as additive in
cement and steel.
Can be used to make roller ball which is used in marba
industries & steel industries.
15. Broken rice is a piece of rice grains, broken in the
field, during drying, transport or by milling.
It is fragmented but not defective.
Very small broken rice is called brewers’ rice.
Utilisation:
It is used to make starch which is used as laundry
starch and in foods, cosmetics and textile
manufacture.
Used in brewing in beverage industries.
Used in custard powder manufacturing.
16. Paddy is milled to remove the husk and this yields brown
rice. During the second stage of milling, the outer brown
layer is removed to produce white or polished rice, called a
Rice Bran.
It is composed of carbohydrate (33%–36%), crude fat and o
(18%–21%), crude protein (14%–16%), dietary fibers (9%–
15%), and ash (8%–10%).
It is rich in B-complex, vitamins and contains several
minerals, including iron and zinc.
various anti-nutritional factors (such as lipases, trypsin
inhibitor, hemaglutinin– lectin & phytates) are also present
it, therefore it is underused as a value-added food product.
17. It is used in manufacturing of edible grade oil, rice bran
wax & Industrial grade crude oil.
Also used in free fatty acid manufacture.
Plasticizers
As a cattle feed.
