1. Tyvola Senior Center wins first place in Area Agency on Aging Contest
The Tyvola Senior Center was recently awarded first place in the Centralina Area Agency on Aging
“Blaze a Trail Older Americans Month Contest.” Senior centers in the 9-county region were asked to
complete entries highlighting innovative programming. The Tyvola Senior Center submitted the Adopt A
Grand intergenerational partnership program with Communities in Schools to the contest. The first place
finisher receives $500 for their senior center from the Centralina Area Agency on Aging.
The Adopt A Grand program was a collaboration between Tyvola Senior Center Staff, Communities In
Schools staff, and Tyvola Senior Center participants who helped to develop and implement the
curriculum used during the year long program. The motto of the program was “each one teach one” which
highlighted the potential for elementary students and senior citizens to both learn and teach during their
time together.
