Trash is a big issue in Hawaii. You will find trash in all beaches, in many cases you will see more trash than fish. In 2014 57 tons of trash were removed from Hawaii beaches, and there is still there is more all over. This hurts the wildlife, the coral reef and the beautiful beaches that sustain the Hawaiian economy.
One solution is the seabin. The seabin is a floating trash collecting device. It was created by two Australian surfers that were tired of all the trash they found while surfing. This allows for trash to be collected without active cleanup services and people combing the beaches. The plastic gathered can be recycled or reused.
The problem with this solution is that though it is a good step forward, it cannot keep up with all of the trash found in the ocean, we would need thousands of these bins to make a change in the beaches.
A better solution I have found is the Ocean Cleanup Project. Created by a teenage surfer, he believed we should use the ocean tides and currents to let the ocean clean itself. This is a much bigger scale version of the seabin and it has a much bigger impact on the oceans. This would be the solution I would implement in Hawaii. We would build one of these off the coast, we would have it crowdfunded at first, but later on we could use the recycled plastic to fund the project continually. This solution will not harm the wildlife or the reefs and would be more sustainable than a governmental cleanup or volunteers.
