Gender roles in society means how
we're expected to act, speak, dress,
groom, and conduct ourselves based
upon our assigned sex. For example,
girls and women are generally
expected to dress in typically
feminine ways and be polite,
accommodating, and nurturing.
3. THE IMPORTANCE OF GENDER ROLES IN FAMILY HEALTH
• Gender roles are extremely important to the functioning of families. The family is
one of the most important instructions. It can be nurturing, empowering, and
strong. Some families are still very traditional. The women or mother of the family
stays at home to take care of the children and household duties. The man or father
figure goes to work so that he can provide for his family. Many people believe that
this way that things should be. Gender determine the expectations for the family.

4. STUDY GOALS WERE TO IDENTIFY FAMILY PATTERNS OF GENDER ROLE ATTI TUDE
To examine the conditions under which these patterns emerged,
and to assess the implications of gender attitude patterns for family
conflict. Participants were mothers, fathers, and first- and second-
born adolescents from 358 White, working and middle-class US
families. Results of cluster analysis revealed three gender role
attitude patterns: egalitarian parents and children, traditional
parents and children, and a divergent pattern, with parents more
traditional and children more egalitarian.
5. ALSO GENDER ROLES ARE CULTURAL AND PERSONAL. THEY DETERMINE HOW
MALES AND FEMALES SHOULD THINK, SPEAK, DRESS, AND INTERACT WITHIN
THE CONTEXT OF SOCIETY AND IT CAN BE DEFINED AS THE BEHAVIORS,
VALUES, AND ATTITUDES THAT A SOCIETY CONSIDERS APPROPRIATE FOR BOTH
MALE AND FEMALE. TRADITIONALLY, MEN AND WOMEN HAD COMPLETELY
OPPOSING ROLES, MEN WERE SEEN AS THE PROVIDER FOR THE FAMILY AND
WOMEN WERE SEEN AS THE CARETAKERS OF BOTH THE HOME AND THE
FAMILY. BUT IF YOU'RE A WOMAN, THAT DOESN'T MEAN THAT YOU ARE
SUPPOSED TO CLEAN THE HOUSE, DO THE LAUNDRY OR WASH THE DISHES OR
MORE LIKE DO ALL THE HOUSEHOLD CHORES. MALE MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY
CAN DO IT TOO. IF WE WANT TO BREAK STEREOTYPES AND ACHIEVE GENDER
EQUALITY, WE MUST START INSIDE OUR HOME

I will be a role model for the youth by
showing them how to help others and
be responsible in everything that is
done to show and make them feel
respect for the elderly. be a good
example to the children so that they
can pass it on to the following
generations.

remain staunchly traditional. The family's woman or mother stays at home to care for the
children and perform household duties. The man or father figure goes to work in order to
support his family. Many people believe that this is the proper way to do things. Gender
influences the family's expectations. This review will explain those expectations as well as how
they impact the family.
• There was a time when women were expected to stay at home. There are many more working
mothers nowadays. Many people's attitudes have shifted as a result.
• Every family has rituals that feed, clothe, care for, and shelter them. Most women believe they
are in charge of the majority of the emotional work. This is a reference to gender construction
theory. Someone has to be the provider and someone has to take care of the home for the
family to function. Both genders are capable of performing various tasks.
8. HOW DOES FAMILY AFFECTS GENDER ROLES?
Family dynamics can especially influence gender
specialization. Parents of sons are more likely to
express conservative gender role views than
parents of daughters, with fathers emphasizing
the paternal breadwinning role for males.
