1. INTRODUCTION:
Many contact friends have asked me to write something less technical and more
practical for "HOME" applications regarding corrosion.
I understood that the vast majority of my articles are really more for
professionals who work with corrosion, and I have many contacts who need
more practical and simple information in this area.
Everyone who has already had any contact with my posts or training knows that
corrosion has four basic characteristics, which I always mention, and it is very
true and important to know that are:
4. Corrosion is a natural phenomenon and therefore all metal will corrode.
Corrosion is "DEMOCRATIC", it attacks everyone without exception. Here in
Brazil, USA, Europe, Whites, Blacks, Hereto , GLSs and etc.
It is an irreversible process, once the metal has corroded, the oxides never
return to metal.
In the vast majority of cases is multifactorial ie, there are several factors acting
together, for example water, dirt (powders), temperature, winds and so on …
Knowing this is a big step already to understand what happens with your gates, windows,
cars, bicycles, toys, motorcycles, home appliances - everything in the house that is made
with metal will present corrosion sooner or later!
I am sorry, but it is, as a law of nature like the Law of Gravity!
A well-known politician has already asked to eradicated it because of the many problems
that it produced...
THAT IS IMPOSSIBLE!
Many may be thinking that I am a pessimist wanting to sell solutions.
No, I'll give some solutions for free!
MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF CORROSION :
7. But before to complete the above reasoning, I feel that I must be fair and explain
that corrosion is not only maleficent as we will see below.
Another good news is that good companies and their designers seek to develop
and produce products with metals with paintings and other types of protection
(there are hundreds of them), so that the products do not present corrosion
during the expected useful life.
Good isn't it?
The problem is that not all companies do so and that's when your refrigerator,
oven, and other products after some time begins to show signs of rust.
That are those reddish spots and if you clean, often have a little hole behind the
rust. I know you have experienced it as I am not an exception.
Coincidentally, perhaps because I like to work with, corrosion persecutes me and
at my home corrosion attacks a lot ...
Well before entering into the most interesting part that is how to solve these
problems, I find it necessary to be fair with such a natural phenomenon, and to
present some of its benefits, which we all use and without corrosion we would
face and have serious problems.
8. BENEFICIAL EXAMPLES OF CORROSION:
The batteries operate due to corrosion when different metals bound together generate
energy when we need it. Imagine a world without batteries: Turn on motor cars and
other vehicles, cell phones, watches, communicating radios, battery-powered portable
equipment and much more :
It's corrosion that provides the power and load required for all of that.
We need many metals in our body and it's lack can generates dangerous sickness and
produce:
Iron for instance is an essential mineral for health and its lack generates anemia. The symptoms of iron deficiency in the body are:
1. Extreme tiredness, frequent sleep or discouragement;3
2. Difficulty learning or being attentive;
3. Swollen ankles or swelling in other joints;
4. Loss of hair or weak and brittle wires;
5. Pale skin or interior colorless eyelids;3
6. Lack of appetite, changes in taste or tongue;
7. Frequent infections due to low immunity;
And how do we ingest the iron?
Due to the corrosion that transforms metals into hydroxides and ions.
Look even life has benefits because of corrosion, so do not see it as something
"PERNICIOUS " is natural.
9. Many galvanic surface treatments can only be
possible due to electroplating which is corrosion in
reverse.
There are dozens of other processes, who want to know more
is just to enter the link below that has everything there and we
will not comment more because our subject is another.
http://stct.com.br/blog/2017/09/03/aspectos-positivos-da-corrosao/
So let's get down to the main subject which is what I
promised.
10. 2. PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS FOR RESOLVING CORROSION PROBLEMS ON
THE HOME:
2.1. In many cases corrosion is starting in appliances, tools, workshops,
gates and windows, as in the figures below there are suitable solutions
that are described below.
PICTURE 1 - Corrosion in a washing machine.
16. Remove corrosion mechanically with sandpapers or brushes and you can use
together some chemical products, very easy to find in hardware store.
Look for the ones with the name;
“RUST REMOVERS, OR CORROSION REMOVERS”
Those based on oxalic acid are the ones I use.
On the internet a quick search will find many and are cheap effective and
make the job properly.
"DO NOT USE RUST CONVERTERS”
They promise to solve it and you can paint over, but I do not recommend it,
because the corrosion continues underneath. You do not see until it displaces
and makes a hole in the place.

17. I. Once the corrosion is removed until the steel base is visible, thoroughly wipe the
site thoroughly with detergent and dry thoroughly.
II. Pass an anticorrosive, pigmented ink base - the name is complicated, but any ink
shop has it - it's the famous and old Zarcão, but its coloration is strong orange and
difficult to cover and there are already more modern products in several colors.
Wipe with a thin layer and allow to dry thoroughly. This will give a much longer life
against corrosion. For warranty I give two coats, but follow the manufacturer's
instructions.
III. Once dry go to the finish using the paint recommended for the product.
Appliances for example require epoxy paint, windows, gates and other external
parts may be a good quality synthetic.
I. I also suggest applying two thin coats so that the finish is good - again, follow the
manufacturer's recommendations, especially regarding the diluent.

YOUR PRODUCT IS REPAIRED AND IT WILL LAST A LONG TIME. SEE THE
FIGURES BELOW.
21. 2.2. Actions for the preservation of machines, equipment, tools, vehicles, Jet Sky
bikes, bicycles and so on.
I. Many owners of these vehicles, including me, are very careful and are always treating
them with the greatest affection. That's where the danger lives. The care is mainly in
the choice of cleaning products where, primarily in quick washes places are used
degreasers that clean quickly and effectively, so they are used, but are very
aggressive, mainly for aluminum and zinc components. A very used one is the Solupan
that is terrible, attacking the metals and is toxic.
DO NOT USE!
They remove the oils and greases, but together the superficial layers of protection against
corrosion and are also very aggressive towards all rubbers: hoses, cushions, covers and so
on.
The best is to use neutral detergent or kerosene that will give a little more work, but it is
worth it, as they are not aggressive to other parts and your equipment will have a much
greater durability.
A good practice is, after washing and drying, spray a little oil, spray these on more exposed
parts and those that already show some signs of corrosion start as prevention.
22. II. Another very common practice is cleaning the bottom of vehicles, as there is
the idea that the dirt roads impregnated by travel, often on dust roads, will
result in corrosion and reduce noise.
II. Another ILLUSION”, because normally to do it faster, they use high water
pressures that remove what should not, which are greases and other
lubricants, and some parts such as axles, semi-axles, suspension, and joints,
homokinetic parts will have less durability.
Also in many places such degreasers are used and all rubber components
become dry and cracked, and losing their function early.
HERE THE SOLUTION IS EASY AND PRACTICAL - LET NATURE CARE- IS BETTER!
Following these tips will get your equipment always well maintained and corrosion free.
23. 2.3. Actions for the prevention of machines, equipment, tools, vehicles, Jet Sky
bikes, bicycles and the like.
Similar to the previous one, but with important differences.
Water as moisture is one of the most present agents its elimination or even reduction at
low values is a very practical and inexpensive alternative.
For this there are desiccants in permeable bags in the market and these products "attract
moisture" as absorbents and products that are stored with these materials do not corrode.
I learned a lot about that while working at the industry and used them very effectively for
the protection of products during storage and transportation, including for exportation.
Even today, when working with companies, I often turn to these solutions for cases
where products can not have any signs of corrosion.
The sectors where they are most used are: Automotive, Metallurgical, Stamping,
Sintering, freezers, refrigerators, washing machines, among others.
24. When I realized these good properties and their effectiveness, I began to
use these products, and some of them that I recommend are shown next:

PRODUCTS THAT I RECOMMEND

27. PICTURE 13 - Use of desiccant bags in tool
boxes to prevent corrosion.

magnification showing in detail.
29. CONCLUSIONS:
CORROSION IS A NATURAL
PHENOMENA AND, FOR THAT, IT CAN
NOT BE CONSIDERED BENEFICIALLY OR
MALEFICENT.
NOBODY SHOULD WORRY ABOUT THE
ELIMINATION OF CORROSION, BUT IN
SEEK TO UNDERSTAND THE
PHENOMENON BETTER.
30. UNDERSTAND BETTER CORROSION AND
ITS MECHANISMS IS THE STARTING
POINT TO LIVE WITH IT, TAKING
ACCOUNT OF ITS BENEFITS AND
AVOIDING TECHNICALLY THEIR
DAMAGES.
