Creative Writing
3rd Grade Unit
Allison Kennedy
Spring 2016
Technology Integration Rationale
• Technology is incredibly important in helping students cultivate their
creative writing potential. It aides them in increasing their
vocabulary, preparing the planning of their writing, collaborating
with peers, and sharing their finished work. Technology allows
students to work together, peer-edit, and publish their works of
writing in a creative and non-conventional way.
• In this presentation, we will learn how students can benefit from
incorporating technology into learning about different styles of
writing – especially creative writing. There are many different means
in which teachers can integrate blogs, videos, smart board activities,
and websites that incorporate creative writing tools.
Technology Integration Rationale
• There are many benefits to adding technology into teaching subjects
for students, which will be seen within this presentation. Students
are able to view the teaching topic through many different
platforms, and on a level that they are able to relate to.
• Students can participate in interactive games, collaborate on their
writing pieces, and be able to write and illustrate their own pieces
into a final draft with many different technological tools presented in
this PowerPoint.
• The 21st century incorporates technology into many different areas
of these students’ lives – so it makes sense that teaching creative
writing should be no different, and find ways to incorporate
technology into the lessons as well.
Evaluation and Citation of Internet Content
• All websites used in this presentation were found from reputable
sources such as a university or government site, and have proven to
be reliable sources of information.
• It is so important to ensure that trustworthy and dependable sites
are used when discussing educational matters, in order to have the
most reliable and up-to-date information to be educating your
students with.
• All websites have been cited within the presentation in order for the
viewer to be able to be directed to the original website in which the
information originated from.
Blog
“Write Away with me” is a blog that prides itself on inspiring young
students to become passionate creative writers, and to assist teachers in
sparking that passion within their students. This blog runs professional
development opportunities, after-school programs, and workshops for
teachers, students, and parents to help develop these skills. They pride
themselves on developing students’ writing, creative thinking, and
storytelling skills throughout their programs.
Click on the picture to go straight to this teachers’ blog and learn about the programs
and opportunities to learn about creative writing!
Blog
This blog post is dedicated in
helping teachers instill
excitement within students’
creative writing opportunities.
This blog shows teachers how
to make students’ writing
public using QR codes with an
app on their phones. This
makes writing even more fun
and engaging for students to
share with their teachers,
friends, parents – and
connects it to technology in a
fun, interactive way.
Click on the picture to view this teachers’ blog, and
learn more about making QR codes within your
classroom for your students’ writing!
Podcast
• This podcast by KCNJDavis is a great tool for teachers in reviewing
the steps in order to implement effective teaching in creative writing.
• While giving teachers the steps in teaching this form of writing, the
podcast also delivers student work – from a 6th grade student who
just completed her own creative writing piece.
Click the speaker button
to listen to the Podcast!
Youtube video
from this fictional world
creation lesson in order to
watch the Ted-ED lesson for
yourself!
This TED talks educational mini-lesson video gives viewers a lesson on
how to create their own fictional settings within their creative writing
pieces. It gives examples of how great writers such as J.R. Tolken, and
J.K. Rowling created the dimensions of the universes within their novels,
and how we can create them within our creative writing pieces.
Instructional video
Click on the picture taken from
this instructional creative
writing video in order to
understand what ideas and
strategies this third grade
lesson teaches!
This instructional video can be a brief opening lesson for students in order
to understand what goes into the creative writing process. This image from
the video describes the form in which an essay is written, using a
hamburger example – with the “condiments” being all of the details that
need to be added within creative writing pieces.
Internet Resources
• International Literacy Association
“Literacy is the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, compute, and
communicate using visual, audible, and digital materials across disciplines
in any context.” –International Literacy Association
• Reading Rockets
“Most children enter school with a natural interest in writing, an inherent
need to express themselves in words” – Reading Rockets
This site gives teachers with building an engaging and involving creative
curriculum for their students, to help flourish their interest in writing.
• Teaching Creative Writing in Elementary School
This site discusses the absolute importance of being actively involved in
teaching creative writing to your students, and how beneficial it is for them
learners. It gives suggestions for how to teach the subject, how to give
feedback, and how you can instill the importance within your students.
Kidspiration
A Kidspiration lesson
example whereby students
can create their own
characters for a creative
writing exercise. This helps
students with their
imagination, and their
detailed writing skills in
order to make them skilled
creative writers, all while
using technology to aide
them in this process.
Click this image to view this Kidspiration lesson site, and
to download this creative writing file!
Kidspiration
More Kidspiration
exercises that can assist
students in their creative
writing skills. This
exercise, dealing with the
use of adjectives, can help
students become more
descriptive when
discussing the creation of
their setting or their
characters within their
story.
Kidspiration
Kidspiration exercises that
assist in creating more
descriptive language within
students when discussing
character traits. This activity
allows them to interpret
what each character would
wear depending on the event
that the child is attending,
then allowing them to create
their own event to dress a
character for.
Teaching Materials: worksheet
This worksheet is a hands-on way
for students to be able to think
creatively with some aides, as they
are starting their education in
creative writing. They are allowed
to roll the dice to see where their
story will take place, a character that
will appear, and a problem they will
need to solve – and the rest is up to
them!
Teaching Materials: worksheet
This is a graphic organizer
worksheet that can be helpful for
students to understand different
parts of a story that they have read,
in order to understand the different
elements they must add in their
own creative writing stories.
Teaching Materials: worksheets
More creative writing worksheet prompts, to help students in beginning the creative writing
process. Click on any picture to go to the website and download these worksheets!
There’s an app for that!
This iPad app, along with many others
that are listed in the site linked to this
image, is a great resource for kids to
make creative writing a fun and
interactive experience.This app
allows students to create their own
stories as well as pictures and
background scenes that go along with
it.
There’s an app for that!
This is called Book Creator for iPad,
and is one of the top rated creative
writing apps I have found. This app
allows students to create their own
iBooks – which means they are able to
share their pieces to teachers, peers,
and parents. They can add music,
narration, videos and illustrations to
make their books come to life. Click the picture to read more about this app!
They have since updated this app, which isn’t
noted on the website, but it is now free and
works with not only an iPad, but an iPod/iPhone,
and other smart phones, as well.
Smart Board uses
This is a creative way to utilize
the Smart Board during an
activity, like writing, that is
more independence-geared.
This gives students a visual time
span so they know how long
they have to write, they know
what they should look like,
sound like, and feel like while
writing, with reminders to keep
writing!
Smart Board uses
This is such a fun use of the Smart
Board in creating a fun story starter
that kids will enjoy! This Scholastic
website allows teachers to spin the
wheel on the Smart Board in order
to choose a random and fun story
starter for kids to begin their
creative writing pieces about.
Many teachers have reviewed this
site and only said positive things
about how excited their students
were to write after using this fun
story starter activity. Click the image to go straight to the Scholastic site to
try the website out! It’s also a great tool for iPads!
Subject-Specific Internet-based Resource
• Read Write Think
I would use this website within my classroom to support my topic of
writing with the many tools and teaching opportunities that this resource
for teachers and students. This website gives many teacher-friendly
such as lesson plans and subject-specified units, as well as student
activities and iPad/tablet apps to assist students with their learning. This
website gives professional development opportunities as well as parental
after-school support for students who need extra help in this area of subject
matter. This resource gives many different activities that are differentiated
grade-level in order to teach creative writing to many different age ranges.
Uses of the Internet
This website allows teachers
and students to search
through a large selection of
children’s stories. This can
aide students in
understanding the products of
their creative writing – and
can give them inspiration or
ideas around their own
creative writing pieces. Click on this picture to go straight to the Online
Children’s Storybooks website to view the many
different selections they offer!
Uses of the Internet
• Scholastic gives teachers many different resources and lesson plans
in order to aide them in the creative writing teaching process. It
breaks each lesson plan into grade-level and subject-level in order
for teachers to differentiate their lessons.
• An additional website, CreativeWritingTeaching Ideas gives
teachers so many fun and interactive ways to incorporate creative
writing into their curriculum. These prompts and story ideas give
teachers and students an exciting way in which they can use their
imagination when coming up with creative writing stories.
Web 2.0 Uses of the
Internet
This computer program, Storybook
Weaver Deluxe, is a software that
allows students to participate in
their own creative writing with use
of backgrounds, characters, and
pictures in order to stimulate their
creativity. This program assists
students in improving their creative
writing skills while being able to
illustrate their own stories in a fun,
and interactive way.
Click on the picture to learn more about this
program, and to be able to download the
program to your computer!
Web 2.0 Uses of the Internet
This is an amazing social
networking website that can be
created within classroom
environments in order for students
to collaborate and share their work
with their peers and teachers. This
site is controlled by the teacher, so
nothing can be posted that is not
school appropriate. Click on the picture to learn more about this
social networking site!

  • 2. Technology Integration Rationale • Technology is incredibly important in helping students cultivate their creative writing potential. It aides them in increasing their vocabulary, preparing the planning of their writing, collaborating with peers, and sharing their finished work. Technology allows students to work together, peer-edit, and publish their works of writing in a creative and non-conventional way. • In this presentation, we will learn how students can benefit from incorporating technology into learning about different styles of writing – especially creative writing. There are many different means in which teachers can integrate blogs, videos, smart board activities, and websites that incorporate creative writing tools.
