LECTURER : SIR AHMAD FIRDAUS BIN ARIFFIN
2. OBJECTIVE
1. To identify the type of the major components in a
piping system
2. To identify material pipe that use in industry
3. to identify the differences between pipelines and piping
system
4. Identify typical piping system issues in Malaysia.
4. WHAT IS THE MAIN COMPONENTS
OF A PLUMBING SYSTEM ?
The main components of a plumbing
system
1. Pipes and fittings
2. Plumbing fixtures
3. The drainage system
5. What is the pipe equipment ?
Pvc
Steel Plumbing
Steel pipes are
cylindrical tubes
made from steel that
are used many ways
in manufacturing and
infrastructure.
VC pipes and PVC fittings
play an important role for
home or industrial plumbing.
We must ensure that we
place the correct equipment
to prevent any leaks or
problems.
A pipe is any system that
delivers fluid for a variety of
applications. Pipes use
pipes, valves, pipe fittings,
tanks and other apparatus to
deliver liquids.
6. What are the 3 main plumbing
functions ?
storm
drainage
sanitary drainage
potable water
7. The type of fitting
Elbows: Used to change the angle or
direction of the pipe run. Most commonly in
90 degrees and 45 degree turns. The
sweep of the fitting describes how fast a
transition or change in direction is made
Couplings: Used to join
two straight pieces of
pipe of the same
diameter.
Tee Fittings: Shaped like the
letter T. Allows for branch lines
Valves: Devices that control the flow of
liquid or gas through or from a pipe.
(Compression valves, ball valves, sleeve-
cartridge valves, ceramic disc valves, etc)
9. What is industrial
pipe used for?
• Industrial pipes are used for
transportation of solids and
fluids
• Transport water, gas, sewage
• Provide essential services for
industries such as oil and
natural gas pipelines, power
plants, chemical processing
facilities, refineries, steel mills,
paper mills and many other.
10. What material is
used for pipes
industry?
Industrial pipe contractor in Malaysia usually able :
• Steel, wood, glass, plastic, PVC, HDPE, fiberglass, aluminum, concrete, copper and more.
• Steel : for heavier industries such as oil and gas.
• PVC: For both structural and electrical applications
• Polypropylene : for transporting chemical waste and other highly corrosive materials.
• Fiberglass pipe : Has high tensile strength but low density, having relatively high mechanical resistance
• Aluminum piping: aluminum piping exist based on the type and amount of alloy added to the aluminum. The level of
aluminum pipe choose will be dependent on whether transporting highly corrosive or high-pressure materials.
• concrete pipe: Heavy but its strength is undoubtedly high, and it can last for decades after installed
• copper, and glass pipe: lighter in weight, easier to be handled as well as not so fragile

12. Which Pipe Material is Best
for Fluid Handling
Operations?
• Must consider factors about facility and fluid
handling system
• Every manufacturing facility is unique and requires
pipe material and fittings for differing applications
• lined pipe material is often the best solution for
most average-sized manufacturing facilities, as it
combines the best features of the two most popular
small-scale choices — plastic and metal.
13. How to avoid corrosion
in piping industry?
• For Pipes, watch your water
• Keep pipes clean
• Add protection to all metals
• Keep structures stable
• Protective against metal to metal
contact
15. What are the different piping
systems?
There are five main types of plumbing pipe materials:
1. Copper
2. Galvanized steel
3. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
4. Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)
5. Cross-linked polyethylene (PEX)
15
16. What is pipeline system?
A pipeline is a system that consists of pipes, fittings (valves
and joints), pumps (compressors or blowers in the case of gas
pipelines), booster stations (intermediate pumping stations
placed along the pipeline to house pumps or compressors),
storage facilities connected to the pipe, intake and outlet
structures
16
17. Where are piping system used?
CPE pipes are used in chemical plants, refineries,
petrochemical plants, power stations, oil wells, gas
pipelines, water supply networks, sewage networks,
etc.
17
18. What are the types of pipelines?
1. Steel Pipeline. Steel pipes are employed for the water
pipelines
2. Cast Iron Pipeline
3. Plastic Pipeline
4. Concrete Pipeline
5. Water Pipeline
6. Waste Water Pipeline
7. Petroleum oil Pipeline
8. Gas Pipeline
19. What are the basic types of pipeline
system?
There are three basic types of pipeline systems:
1. Direct Line system.
2. Ring main system.
3. Free flow system.
19
21. 21
How can you
tell whether a
pipe system
has a common
failure?
1.Pipe system show corrosion
Corrosion is a natural process that converts a refined
metal into a more chemically stable oxide
2.You've Observed Leaks
Sights - If you see pooling liquids or dead patches , it’s
worth checking your pipe for leaks.
Smells - Notice strange odors, Oil or gas might be
slipping out of system.
Sounds - If your system is rumbling or hissing, it could
be a sign that something isn’t right.
3.You've noticed a drop in energy or
pressure.
Friction
Pitting corrosion
Scaling
22. What is the most frequent pipe system failure?
22
Corrosion
Natural phenomenon that transforms a refined metal, such as oxide,
hydroxide, or sulphide, to a more chemically stable form.
Mechanical damage
Mechanical damage is the loss of material due to a mechanical action. Mechanical damage
of pipeline can be defined as localized damage resulting from contact between the pipe
and an object.
Fatigue cracks
Piping fatigue will occur in pipe systems when the combinations of
static and dynamic stresses in the piping components exceed allowable
values.
23. 23
What factors might
cause a plumbing
system to leak?
Broken Seal
When your pipes were initially
installed, they were connected by
seals that keep water where it
belongs. Over time, however, those
seals can wear and break, even if
you’re doing everything right to take
care of your pipes.
High Water Pressure
Pipes are designed to
withstand a certain amount of
pressure, and too much
pressure can cause pipes to
crack and leak.
24. How to maintain a
piping system in the
industry ?
24
1. Plumbing Maintenance Jobs, You Can
Do Yourself.
2. Understand how your plumbing and
water systems work.
3. Fix a leaking pipe.
4. Open the drain.
5. Check for water leaks regularly.
6. Avoid frozen pipes.
25. Which part of the pipe
component in the piping
system if it is damaged can leak
into the piping system ?
25
Based on the study
(Alblasserdam) seal failure is
defined as excessive leakage of
fluids. The amount of leaking fluids
is among other things determined
by the pressure, wear, size,
friction and rotating speed of the
pump. Pump seal failure leads to
loss of fluids and a dangerous
working environment due to
leakage
The cause of the
damaged seal
Improper installation
is probably the most
common cause of
seal failure.
mechanical seal
might fail due to poor
lubrication, or no
lubrication at all.
26. CONCLUSION
The conclusion for this field study is to provide a summary
of design practice, service experience and research work
on the design of component structures and piping
systems, thus providing background and direction for
future work. In addition, this field study is also to
identify the type of pipe material used. This report is
limited to the structural design aspects of metal piping
systems. It does not cover aspects such as inspection,
quality control, fabrication, metal deterioration in
service, and fluid flow.
