2. My academic education and training fall into three categories:
The Open University Bachelor of Arts diploma
Computer and social media training
The circular economy and global e-waste management
The following slides provide an explanation of the learning outcomes I
have achieved.
3. My aim is to complete the Bachelor of Arts (History) diploma in 2018.
I have already achieved the equivalent of a Certificate of Higher
Education in History and Humanities.
The learning outcomes the degree provides are knowledge and
understanding, cognitive (intellectual) skills, practical or professionally
related skills, and key skills.
4. Knowledge and understanding
On completion of this degree I will be able to demonstrate knowledge and
understanding of the following:

subject to controversy, debate, refinement and correction
• Aspects of historical and modern concepts that affect the issues of today
• The use and value of relevant concepts and theories.
5. Cognitive skills
On completion of this degree I will be able to:
• Read critically and think logically
• Evaluate evidence and distinguish between objective knowledge,
hypotheses and opinions
• Apply such knowledge and understanding and other cognitive skills to the
solution of problems of a familiar and unfamiliar nature
• Synthesise information and ideas obtained from a variety of sources,
including written and visual sources.
6. Practical and/or professional skills
On completion of this degree I will be able to:
• Undertake research: seek out, collect and select relevant information in a
systematic manner, using information literacy
• Present a discussion in appropriate language and provide proper
acknowledgement of relevant work by others.
7. Key skills
On completion of this degree I will be able to demonstrate the following
key skills:
• Communicate my ideas effectively both orally and in writing in ways that
demonstrate my knowledge and understanding
• Collaborate with others and participate in group discussion on a complex
subject
• Study and learn independently: including planning and executing a study
programme
• Seek and use feedback, and through reflection and self-assessment
improve performance
• Read and synthesise substantial amounts of material
8. Online training and vocational/academic experience
• Over the past year I have taken the opportunity to develop and expand
my computer and social media skills through online courses available
from Lynda.com. I have completed courses on Adobe Acrobat, Windows
10 and Social Media Marketing.
• These new skills compliment my abilities in MS Word, Excel, OneNote
and PowerPoint, plus Online Conferencing and Wikis gained through
the Open University.
9. Private experience
• Further to my online learning skills I am an active user of social media
with LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook accounts.
• My genealogy research, university and online training have given me the
experience of using diverse computer programs, for example Roots
Magic and CMaps. This has provided me with the ability to learn how to
employ new programs and use them effectively.
10. The Circular Economy: an intoduction
• At the end of 2015, I completed the course Circular Economy: an
introduction hosted by edX/TU Delft. I have gained a greater insight
over the issues concerning the urban mine, biodiversity, working in
systems, value creation, the design of products and more. The circular
economy offers us a dynamic solution for creating a sustainable future.
• This course has given me a much broader perspective of the Circular
Economy to add to my experience in WEEE recycling.
11. The E-waste Challenge MOOC
• Over the next couple of months I will be partaking in a new course, the
E-waste Challenge MOOC hosted by Climate-KIC.
• Through this I intend to learn about the management of e-waste in
accordance with the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions and
how to reduce the impact of e-waste on the environment.
• This will provide me with an excellent opportunity to combine my
practical knowledge of the production process of e-waste recycling with
an improved understanding of the regulations and of its management.
12. • My education and training combined with my work experience provide
me with strong interdisciplinary skills
• Through my education and work experience I possess a broad
perspective and understanding of environmental, economic, political,
cultural and social issues
• I have demonstrated self-motivation, self-initiative and committment to
long term goals
