2. Duration
• The time of sounds and how sounds are
arranged with timing (long or short).
• Defined by the music’s rhythm (movement),
beat (pulse), tempo (speed of a piece) and
accent (emphasis).
In this image I am playing
a song which has a sad
undertone, therefore the
tempo is slow- which in
turn evokes emotion for
the listeners.
3. Structure & Style
Structure is the set up of music and the pattern it
follows: ‘verse, chorus, phrase, theme motif’.
Style is the genre of music: country, jazz, classical,
rap etc.
4. Pitch
The sound produced by a note (high or low).
Includes the melody- notes which create a tune, and
the harmony- different pitches being played at the
same time as one another.
This image shows the different
notes displayed in graphic
notation in my 2016 Choir
book.
This image shows my rough
notation of music - ABA note
structure for Learning Task 5.5.
5. Dynamics
Dynamics: The varying degree of softness and
loudness in a piece of music. Dynamics offer
expression to a piece of music to make it gain depth
and capture the audiences attentions and emotions.
6. Tone Colour
Also called ‘timbre’, defined as the quality of sound
which distinguishes a note being played on one
instrument from the same note being played on another
instrument.
The sound difference when playing the same note on my
guitar than on my parents piano is significantly different to
hear.
7. Texture
Texture is the quality of the sound piece where
instruments/voices are being layered on top of one
another, creating melodic and harmonic compositions.
Attached to the ePortfolio is a quick recording of my voice
layered on top of a friends piano composition (anonymous). The
layering of piano music and vocal adds texture- different sounds.
