" In forensics, there is a lot of diversity in the classes we take
and the people we see which makes classes at Miami Dade
College that much more interesting. Essentialy, we're just one
big family, a great one at that." - Melissa Mella
The Cambridge Academy may have only been at
Miami Lakes Educational Center for a couple of years
now, but it is still well known in and out of the school.
It is the only academy that offers an Advanced
International Certificate of Education (AICE) diploma if
the required credits are met.
The Journalism strand, led by Mrs. Neyda Borges,
is in charge of the school's newspaper (The Harbinger)
and yearbook (Alpha and Omega). In the Pink room
everyone is doing a bit of something; whether it’s writing
a story, taking pictures, or working on a layout, everyone
is always running around "journalizing".
The Engineering program does hands-on work on
machinery, programming, systems, and robotics. The
engineers led by Mr. Kynerd, receive knowledge and
technical experiences that positively impact their
learning careers. “The academy and strand are very
disciplined, lots of hands-on work, and different kinds
of equipment to help us build,” says Stefan Pirone.
Focused on skills and demonstrations, this program
provides students with experiences in the study of
engineering and its effect on our lives. By the end of
their senior year, students in this academy are certified
in many different programming software, providing
them the opportunity to get a job straight out of high
school.
The Forensic Science strand focuses on providing a
basic understanding of the legal system and allowing
students access to the field of criminal justice. Students
in this strand learn about the technology used in a crime
scene, constitutional law, and the legal system. With
students in the Dual-Enrollment program at Miami Dade
College since sophomore year, this strand is the place
for future lawyers or CSI agents.
Whether a journalist, engineer, or lawyer, the
Cambridge academy is a great place to start the future.
