Titu Mir was an important Muslim leader of the peasantry in Bengal in the 18th century who opposed Hinduism and stood up for the economic and religious rights of Muslims. He traveled to Mecca and met Syed Ahmad Barelvi, influencing his views. Titu Mir preached to the poor classes in central Bengal and protested the high taxes being collected by the Bengal government, which ultimately led to his death in 1831. Though his life was cut short, he left a legacy as a champion of Muslims in Bengal and inspired future generations not to lose hope.
