Biodiversity and conservation

3. Endemic species are those species that are found in
just one region and nowhere else in the world.
Any species whose range is restricted to a limited
geographical area.
Since endemic species are unique to a particular
geographical region; they are more vulnerable to
extinction
Isolated geographical areas, such as islands, lakes
or mountain ranges have many endemic species
4.
5. Show small population size
Have only one or few populations
Show little genetic variability
Usually exploited(over hunted)
Narrow geographical range
Examples:
Asian lion
Kashmir stag
Purple frog
Sangai deer
Nilgiri Tahr
8. Endemism is the state of a species being native to
a single defined geographic location, such as an
island, state, nation, country or other defined zone
Types
Paleoendemism :
Paleoendemism means that a species used to live
in a large area but now lives only in a smaller area
e.g. kiwis
Neoendemism:
refers to species that have recently arisen, such as
through divergence and reproductive isolation e.g.
lemur
11. We should protect them as they are often under the
threat of extinction.
In total 117 mammal species, 14 species are
endemic
338 bird species contain12 species that are
endemic
161 reptile species contain 30 species endemic
5600 species of vascular plants found in Pakistan
and 400 are endemic.
12. Know what species are endangered:
Plant native flora:
Avoid use of herbicides/pesticides:
Watch the road and drive carefully:
Do not buy illegal products come from endangered
species:
Support zoo and wildlife parks:
Reduce water consumption:
Make sure your home is not hazard for wildlife:
13. Habitat loose
fragmentation due to draining and filing of inland
wetlands
Pollution also play an important role in effecting
them
Overexploitation (excessive use of resource)
Introduction to new animals and plants
14. They are more vulnerable to extinction. Since they
are rare, the destruction of their habitats would
reduce their population drastically.
Endemic species are damaged by various human
activities the distribution rages and population size
of species will be reduced , leaving them vulnerable
to extinction at much higher rate than other
species

18. The sagebrush, a very common resident of great
BASIN NATIONAL PARK.
The big sagebrush root system can extended as
much as 90 feet in circumference.
The plant allows the plant to collect as much as
water as possible during infrequent rain
And it is an endemic specie.
26. Exist only in one geographical region
Some are endemic to particular continent
Some are endemic to part of continent
Others are endemic to single island
Are Important because restricted to particular
region
Mostly are endangered so have to save them
Play important role in environment
