Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction MBSR is the single most researched, empirically validated, safe and efficacious complementary
medical intervention on record (Baer, 2003). Positive behavioral outcomes are supported by neuroscientific evidence as well as numer-
ous positive effects in clinical oncology. Pioneered by Dr JonKabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, MBSR
teaches you to use you inner resources to relieve stress and manage pain more effectively.
In this 8-week course you will learn practical mind-body awareness techniques. You will be learn effective cognitive, emotional, and con-
templative techniques for dealing with stress and emotional hardship amidst experiences of suffering and pain, as well as developing an
appreciation for the joys of life. These techniques also increase a sense of well-being and decrease the stress and anxiety that comes
from working in fast-paced, demanding, and intense work environments.
Adrianne has offered this course to Palliative Care Fellows at Harvard Medical School and clinicians at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute
(DFCI) at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. They found this training to be helpful for maintaining self-awareness and adminis-
tering self-care through the rigors of their work.

“Since 1980, Adrianne has explored Bud-
dhist philosophy and history with me at Spirit
Rock, of which she was a founding communi-
ty member. This has included a deep explo-
ration of the insight meditation tradition
(Vipassana) in which we practice, as well as
larger Buddhist traditions and their theology,
philosophy and history. Adrianne has an
inquisitive and capacious mind, and she has
during that same time also studied with A.H.
Almaas at the Ridhwan School in Berkeley.
There she has supplemented her learning
with instruction in spiritual experience and
psychoanalysis, and this has given new per-
spectives to her work with us at Spirit Rock.”
