A Creative Funding Solution for Caribbean
Creative Projects
Thursday, December 11, 14
Rationale
• The United Nations Conference on Trade
and Development (UNCTAD) (2008)
declared the creative industries are among
the most dynamic emerging sectors in
world trade.*
• While other economic sectors continue to
contract the creative industries continue to
grow.
• World exports of creative products were
valued at 424.4 US billion in 2005 as
compared with 227.5 US billion in 1995!*
Thursday, December 11, 14
Rationale Cont’d
• Developed countries currently dominate
the global market for production creative
products.
• The large majority of developing countries
are not yet able to harness their creative
capacities for income generation and
economic growth
• Africa as a continent generates less than 1%
of the world trade in creative products and
the Caribbean even less than that!
Thursday, December 11, 14
Missing out?
• The creative industries is a global multi
billion dollar sector that creates:
• Income generation
• Employment
• Social Cohesion
• Cultural Diversity
• Export Opportunity
Thursday, December 11, 14
Why are we missing
out?

Access to Finance
Thursday, December 11, 14
Access to Finance
• Most financial institutions deem the
creative industries too “risky” and
therefore tend not to lend money to
persons in this sector.
• Due to the situation above many creative
persons “self fund” their projects. Only
going as far as their cash reserves would
allow.

A Creative Funding Solution for Caribbean
Creative Projects
Thursday, December 11, 14
What is VisionFunder?
• VisionFunder is a social fundraising
platform designed for Caribbean creative
projects
• Social - driven by social media
• Fundraising - seed capital and capitalization
• Caribbean - CariForum territories
• Creative Projects - Creative Industries
(including technology)
Thursday, December 11, 14
Why VisionFunder?
• As of April 2012 there were over 452
socially driven fundraising platforms active
worldwide. Most of these platforms are
exclusively for projects in North America
and Western Europe.*
• Together, these platforms raised approx. 1.5
billion dollars and funded over 1 million
projects in 2011 alone!*
• The Caribbean has little to no access to
this funding and is locked out of millions of
investment dollars by not having our own
social funding platform.
Thursday, December 11, 14
How does VisionFunder
work?
1. Create your project on VisionFunder
2. Choose your funding goal and timeframe needed to
raise your funds.
3. Share your project with your “rainmakers” - family,
friends, fans, invited contacts and the diaspora
community inviting them to invest in your project
using VisionFunder tools.
4. Track the results and collect your funds to launch
your vision!
Thursday, December 11, 14
All or Nothing
• Every VisionFunder project must be fully
funded before its time expires or all funds
return to the ‘rainmakers’.
1. This ensures no project is under-funded.
2. It removes risk and promotes
transparency for both “rainmakers” and
creators.
3. It motivates both creators and
rainmakers to take action.
Thursday, December 11, 14

Who can fund their
project on VisionFunder?
• VisionFunder is especially designed for:
• Caribbean artists, filmmakers, musicians,
designers, writers, illustrators, inventors,
app designers, performers...
• Caribbean organizations and communities
dedicated to creative practitioners.
• VisionFunder only funds “projects” i.e
initiatives with a start and end date.
Thursday, December 11, 14
Why would people fund
projects?
• Rewards - creators offer “rainmakers” cool
products, benefits, perks and experiences for their
investment.
• Relationships - many “rainmakers” are family,
friends and fans of the creators and want to help.
• Passion - “rainmakers” are given the opportunity
to invest in projects that reflect their own passions
and see them come to life.
• Philanthropy - many members of the diaspora are
seeking opportunities to give back and
VisionFunder creates an easy and safe way to do it.
