Genre is used as a guideline as to what the audience is to
expect from a certain type of film. However these guidelines
can be flexible or combined with another genre therefore
                     creating a sub-genre.

Sub-genres are used by the director so that a film can contain
traits from both types of genre. An example of this would be
that a crime-thriller would include both fast paced and
suspense action within a crime or mystery.

Some people believe that genre is more of a descriptions that
tells the audience what basic traits to expect within a film
however it isn't as much of a guideline as it can easily be
modified to suite the film during its production.
Crime is a genre that revolves around the action
of a criminal mastermind. A Crime film will often
revolve around the criminal himself, chronicling
his rise and fall. Some Crime films will have a
storyline that follows the criminal's victim, yet
others follow the person in pursuit of the
                       criminal.

Crime genres are usually fast paced and a sense
of mystery from either the plot or characters.
» Mob/Gangster:
Mob/Gangster films are a sub-genre of crime films that
are often centered around an organized crime or the
mafia. The plot usually revolves around the rise and fall
of the organized crime leader showing the effects caused
by the organized crime in detail.

» Crime-Thriller:
A crime-thriller film is a sub-genre of crime films. This
sub-genre is a combination of a typical crime genre and a
typical thriller genre. Usually the plot focusses and
revolves around a serial killer; a murderer; a robbery or a
man-hunt. Crime-Thrillers use both action and
psychological aspects to build tension and suspense.
» The Silence of the Lambs - An FBI agent develops a
relationship with the notorious serial killer, Dr.
Hannibal Lector, in order to gain Lector’s assistance in
the hunt for another serial killer.

» Reservoir Dogs - An unacquainted group of
professional criminals is brought together for a
  diamond robbery that goes amiss.

» S.W.A.T – A S.W.A.T team (of four) is organized within
the L.A.P.D to prevent and solve crimes around the
city. However dealing with a French drug lord becomes
a problem for the S.W.A.T team, a problem they would
  need to overcome.

A thriller Film is a genre that revolves around anticipation
and suspense. The aim for Thrillers is to keep the
audience alert and on the edge of their seats throughout
                          the movie.

This genre revolves around a problem faced by the main
character or hero this could be an escape, a mission, or a
                         mystery.

The main trait within a thriller genre is to create a sense
of danger around the main character.
» Action Thriller:
An action thriller uses physical action to create suspense
within the film. This sub-genre will also occasionally use
a continuous motion of action whether it be physical
stunts, a fight scene or chase scenes which are all factors
found within a traditional action genre of film.

» Crime-Thriller :
A crime-thriller film is a sub-genre of crime films. This
sub-genre is a combination of a typical crime genre and a
typical thriller genre. Usually the plot focusses and
revolves around a serial killer; a murderer; a robbery or a
man-hunt. Crime-Thrillers use both action and
psychological aspects to build tension and suspense.
» Psychological Thriller:
Psychological thrillers contain the main traits within a
thriller genre, of building up suspense and danger
around the main character. However in an psychological
thriller the suspense comes from the mind rather than a
physical threat. This means that the main character relies
on their thoughts to solve the situation.

» Religious Thriller :
The religious thriller genre revolves around religious
aspects including objects, questions and ceremonies.
Many religious thrillers include supernatural experiences,
these may include demons, exorcisms or mysteries
within a church.
» The Great Escape - A large group of POW’s plan an
escape from a German camp in World War II.

» North By Northwest - Mistaken for a government
agent by foreign spies, an advertising agent travels
  cross-country trying to survive.

» The Silence of the Lambs - An FBI agent develops
a relationship with the notorious serial killer, Dr.
Hannibal Lector, in order to gain Lector’s
assistance in the hunt for another serial killer.
