2. Technology . The branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment, drawing upon such subjects as industrial arts, engineering, applied science, and pure science (Dictionary.com 2009). Technology today is a result of inventions and discoveries that have been enhanced and built upon for greater use. Creations such as automobiles, buildings, phones, cartoons, radios, and etc. have been upgraded so that it would make life easier and entertaining. It is evident that since the 1930s advancements have occurred in technology in a variety of ways. Introduction
3. In the 1930’s automobiles were considered the nations mark of leisure and expediency. Cars took on a more aerodynamic design and new innovations were introduced including: synchromesh transmissions, automatic chokes, and hydraulic brakes to improve mechanical quality. Fortunately, during this time gas prices were at an estimated 17 cents per gallon compared to our recently estimated $2.74 per gallon. Cadillac Convertible
4. Now, in 2009, automobiles have made it a long way since then. The design in cars and the performance has improved and changed according to the taste of this generation. Cadillac Convertible
5. In the 1930s phones were not very common in many households. In major cities it was estimated to be about only 1,000 phones, at the most, in use at once.
6. Unlike our prior years, phones are very popular and become essential for communication throughout society. Our phone numbers have become seven digits differing from the former two letters and three numbers. Phones have advanced since the 1930’s making them more reliable, smaller, and even portable.
7. On March 6, 1930 in Springfield Massachusetts, Clarence Birdseye released the first retail sales on frozen food including the following: fish, meats, vegetables, and fruits. This was the beginning of a quicker and easier way for people to preserve food and eat, but the idea did not really expand until the 1950s.
8. Since the idea of frozen foods it has been researched that four out of five households in the U.S. eat frozen vegetables. Frozen foods are now healthier with better taste and quality.
9. “ Fiddlesticks” released August 16, 1930 was the first color sound cartoon ever made by Ub Iwerks. Movies did not suffer severe losses during the Great Depression because they were so popular making it the “Golden Era” for cartoons.
10. Because of the success and advancement in earlier cartoons we are able to view and enjoy more sophisticated cartoons like Disney’s Phineas and Ferb and many others.
11. In the 1930s, the radio was more than a source of communication and entertainment, but it was an outlet for the impediment of this Great Depression. It kept the audience informed and embodied political pressure.
12. Radios now have better signals and come in different sizes, shapes, and designs. Over time new features have been added advancing the way we listen to information and enjoy entertainment.
