2. Our Being – Who we are & Why we are here?
We are not human being having spiritual aspect, but indeed we are spiritual
being (i.e., souls) with human experience involving physical, intellectual and
emotional aspects.
The spiritual aspect is the main one, particularly, for our being in hereafter that
is eternal life (see: Qur’an 40:11, and aalim-e-arwah --> aalim-e-khalq).
Spiritual well-being and physical fitness influences, to some degree, the qualities
such as Intellectual/mental alertness and emotional stability.
In Islamic philosophy, the immortal RūH (i.e., spiritual aspect) "drives" the
mortal aspects of our being (See: Qur’an 17:85 and 39:42).
Being connected with the creator (i.e., ALLAH) is fitrah, and those are
people of fitrah who care about their spiritual well-being along with
physical fitness. This is something that human beings are forgetting and is
going in heedlessness (!)غفلت

4. Islamic Way of Life – Branches (or parts) of Shariat
(i.e., Islam as Deen)
Imaniyat: Faiths and Beliefs
E.g., on ALLAH’s existence, oneness ()توحيد and being ONLY
rab, prophethood (with Muhammad SAW as being LAST
nabi & rasool, خاتم
والرسل األنبياء ), angels, books, etc.
Ibadiyat: Worships
E.g., salat, zakat, sawm (fasting), and hajj, etc.
Muamalat: Mutual dealings, contracts and
transactions
E.g., on trade and commercial
Ikhlaqiat: moral character, ethics and values
E.g., humility, generosity, etc.
Muaasharat: Etiquettes and social conduct
E.g., on gatherings/meeting, services and relationships to
others.
Based on
teachings of
Quran Karim
& Sunnah
(i.e., words
and actions
of Hazrat
Muhammad
SAW).
6. ALLAH’s Motivation
for Us to Study the Arabic and Understand the
Quran Karim!
(Surah Qamar: 17)
Reference: Surah 43 Az Zukhruf Ayat 3
7. Motivation from Quran and Hadith
for Us to Learn the Quran
ALLAH describes Himself as the teacher of the Quran (in the
Surah Ar- Rahman).
So, no matter how low our ability is, Allah will make it possible if we
are sincere and trying.
A hadith further emphasizes…
“The best among you is he who learns the Quran and teaches it.”
[Sahih Bukhari, Vol. 2, Page 752]
The Most Beneficent (Allah)! - Has taught
(you mankind) the Quran (by His Mercy).
8. Linguistic Motivation of Quranic Arabic
Total 77429 Quranic words without their
inflections* (and conjugations) are 4845.
This small set of words (along with their
inflections) are almost equivalent to half
of the total words in the Quran Karim.
Note: This is an ESTIMATE about
Quranic words, which serve us to get
motivation for
Understanding and learning the Quran
Building the Quranic vocabulary
*Inflection is a change in the form of a word to express a grammatical function or attribute such
as status, number, gender, type and tense. E.g., write, wrote, written, writing.

10. Situational Story: Why Understanding Quran is Crucial
Situational Story Our Life
Purpose Being Well Fed (i.e., Starvation) Successful Herein and HEREAFTER
Need A good and tasty dish/food Guidance (Islamic Way of Life)
Solution
To UNDERSTAND the Recipe
(i.e., ingredients and methodology)
and prepare by ACTING accordingly.
NOTE: Similarly, What we will/should do with a Letter/message from the postman in a
Foreign language?
11. Analogical example:
Success and Judgement – Herein & Hereafter
4 types of students in given learning
environment (e.g., teachers,
classmates, institution, etc.)
1. Get both grades and learn the skills
that benefit later on!
2. Don’t get grades but learn the skills
3. Get just grades but don’t learn much
4. Get neither grades nor learn
enough skills
Note: Herein, people later on will
judge/measure one by his level
of contribution, and don't care
what were his constraints &
situation
4 types of people in given earning
(i.e., herein dunya) environment
(e.g., family, friends/peers, job, etc.)
1. Successful both herein and hereafter
2. Life herein is tough but earn hereafter
3. Enjoy the life as per their desires but
failed to earn hereafter
4. Neither successful herein nor
hereafter
Note: Hereafter, ALLAH will take
into account all things (e.g.,
situation, constraints, etc.)
and judge one by his intentions &
sincere effort
12. Analogical example: Journey to Noor (Guidance)
Our Iman is that Quran (and Deen-e-Islam) are light/noor (i.e., Guidance) for us
Journey towards them will make us successful both herein and hereafter
Success will follow like our shadow when we move towards this noor (i.e.,Islam)
Iman topped with Guidance* (and Knowledge) will bring us close to Quran (and
Islam) and motivate us to practice (Act on) Islam, and this cycle continues…
Knowledge is not power until it comes into action as per right guidance!
Indeed, 1st step is to know and get right guidance --> then act accordingly,
because the fruit of knowledge is in acting upon it.
Note: This journey is for getting constant guidance, and not merely for knowledge!
No intention & No priority lose in motivation and then its very tough
to put even small effort, forget about sincere effort.
One gets according to his share and efforts, so we need to put sincere efforts
So our intention+priority for this purpose motivation at least sincere
effort can be made, then there is no stopping because remember
Then, naturally, we will benefit…

13. Why we are here and learning this?
Are we #fulfilling the #rights of #Quran as #Muslims?
Our Aim must be to
Obtain HIDAYA (and not merely
knowledge!) by asking ALLAH’s
acceptance for this! and
Fulfill the important rights of
Quran such as: reading &
understanding, acting & dawah!
Following Dua’s Ref – Quran 2:127 & 3:8.
14. How to be Productive?
Making smart choices with your -------->
Should be done continuously!
Aim: Maximizing the potential
and achieving beneficial results both herein and hereafter.
If you have lots of energy and time, but lack focus, then
You’ll be constantly distracted, jumping from one thing to the other, unable to
complete your task at hand.
If you have both focus & time, but lack energy, then
You’ll be too tired and lethargic to tackle your tasks.
If you have both focus & energy, but don’t put (enough) time, then
You simply can’t be productive.
Thus, productivity is a function of all three elements, and remember this:
Productivity = Focus x Energy x Time (towards a beneficial goal)

16. Arabic Speech/Kalima is made up of three types of words
Each word in Arabic can be placed in one of these three categories/buckets.
1. ISM has meaning and is independent of time.
Primitive/Simple, e.g.: Book, Ibrahim, Masjid, etc.
Derived from verbs (aka MASDAR): properly express the verbal idea in the form of a noun, e.g.: Standing,
Walking, etc.
2. FI'L has meaning and is dependent of time – Deals with both Action & Time.
3. HARF alone does not make sense until a word (either Ism or Fi’l) comes with it.
Easy definition: If a Word is not … & … then it’s …
20. ISM can be a person, place, thing, idea, adjective, adverb, & more
Examples:
Person: Amina, Ali, Abdullah, etc.
Place: Espoo, Pakistan, Hospital, etc.
Thing: Chair, cap, pencil (any item or
object).
Ideas (including Masdar) – names of
intangible things: Happiness,
standing, love, teaching, education.
Adjectives (ism which describe ism):
Small, huge, good, bad, tall, etc.
Adverbs (ism that describe the
fi’l/action being done, e.g., --ly
family): working hardly, walking
slowly.
More: contains set of special ISMs,
e.g., Pronouns, Ism-e-Mawsool, Ism-
e-Ishara.
21. Properties of Ism
ISM has four properties.
1. Status
Role of the ism
2. Number
Quantity or amount of ism, i.e., single, pair/dual, or plural.
3. Gender
Masculine or feminine (both biologically and grammatically).
4. Type
Common or proper
Note: Remember these properties in this order, e.g., S N G T
22. Properties of Ism – Status
Every Ism plays a role in a sentence where some act (Fi’l) is being done
Status of that Ism tells us what role it plays!
We will learn next What is status of ism and How to identify it in different situations/roles
We can label isms in 3 ways according to their role
Three states/forms of Ism as per its status
1. RAF'A (فعَ)ر
2. NASB (ْبصَن)
3. JARR (رَج)
Note: Remember forms/states of Ism, e.g., R N J
23. Properties of Ism – Status | RAF'A (فعَ)ر
The Doer(s) (ism) doing/performing the act in a sentence is
in the RAF’A (
فعَر
) status, and
called Marfoo‘ - وعُف ْرَم (Optional to remember this!)
Examples:
Ali hit Amr
Book has fallen down Falling act is done by book in this sentence!
The milk is white Action of being white is done by the milk in this sentence!
The Word ALLAH is in Raf’a status because Doer of action of being ONE and being Un-wanting.
Say, "He is Allah, [who is] One, - “Allah is the Un-wanting.”
(Perfect, who is in need of none and of Whom all are in need.)
24. Properties of Ism – Status | NASB (بْصَن)
Any extra information about the act (Fi’l) is called a detail
E.g., answers to what, which, where, when, why and how, etc.
The ism(s) providing any detail(s) of the act in a sentence is
in the NASB (بْصَن) status, and
called Mansoob – ٌ
وبُصْنَم (Optional to remember this!)
Also, set of Harf-e-Nasb words also make their Victim-Ism Mansoob (i.e., in Nasb status)
Example:
Ali ate white bread quickly yesterday in the restaurant to save time
Which What How When Where Why
Who has created the seven heavens one above the other;
25. Properties of Ism – Status | JARR (رَج)
Generally, the ism after ‘of’ (i.e., having possession/ownership) in a sentence is
in the JARR (رَج) status, and
called Majroor –ورُرْجَم (Optional to remember this!)
Note: set of Harf-e-Jarr words also make their Victim-Ism Majroor (i.e., in Jarr status)!
The word ‘of’ can be either clear/direct or indirect
School of Hajra | Abdullah’s book (i.e., book of Abdullah) | My car (i.e., car of mine)
Example:
Amina’s car hit bike of him
Teachers of Ali taught their new students

30. Arabic – Consonants & Vowels
Two major types of sounds in human language: consonants and vowels.
Arabic vowels are of 2 types: SHORT and LONG - Far easier to learn/understand
Arabic alphabets contains consonants and long vowels.
Short vowels are written as signs/symbols above or below them to form the words.
3 Long vowels (aka حروف
العلة )
Alif (/aa/), Waw (/uu/), Ya (/ii/ or /ee/)
By default, preceded by short vowel
of same nature (i.e., zabar before alif)
Otherwise, Semi Vowels – when zabar
comes before Waw & Ya ---> /w/ & /ai/
REF: Arabic Vowels series
31. Arabic Short Vowels – Harakat
Mainly, 3 short vowels, zabar /a/, zair /i/ or /e/, and paish /u/ or /o/ ------>
Read after the Arabic alphabet
Tanween – a phenomenon of doubling the short vowels ---------->
Aka nunation – adds /n/ sound at the end, e.g., /bu/ --> /bun/
Only occurs at the end of an ISM --> This is indeed the default (heavy) case of ISMs!
• Act as indefinate article (i.e., a/an of English) for singular ISM --> Common ISM
• No Tanween for definite article (i.e., the) when AL comes in the beginning of ISM. --> Proper ISM
A FI'L never takes a tanween.
SAKOON – no vowels/Harakat
SHADDA – two of the same!
1st has Sakoon
2nd has a short vowel
32. Properties of Ism – Status | Summary
Ism in the RAF’A (
فع َر
) status is called Marfoo‘ – وعُف ْرَم
Doer(s) of Act
Ism in the NASB (
بْصَن
) status is called Mansoob – ٌ
وبُصْنَم
Detail(s) of Act
Ism in the JARR (
ٌ
رَج
) status is called Majroor –ورُرْجَم
Possessor (in a possession relationship, i.e., ism after ‘OF’)
Examples:
They read their books
Cat of mine eats bread
My son drinks milk of cow in the morning

51. Properties of Ism – Status | Heavy vs Light
There are mainly two flavors of Status
Heavy status Normally: ISMs are Heavy, i.e., have extra /n/ sound at the end.)
• ِّماّنِلْسُم ّ
بَر َّونُمسلُم ِّنْيَقْرشَمَّّّّّّونُقمناّف
Light status There are 4 reasons for an Ism to be Light!
• These 4 situations, we will study as we proceed, and for now just remember this!
How to make (or identify) Light status?
An ism is made light by removing the (weight of) extra /n/ sound from the end, which can be done by
Replacing the double accent (Tanween) with single accent (short vowel)
• Applies to singular (both Masculine and Feminine) and Feminine Plural ISMs
Removing the extra ن at the end of the ism
• Applies to Dual and Plural ISMs of both Masculine and Feminine
Accordingly, Lighter version of examples above are as:
ّماِلْسُم ِّّّّّبَر وُمسلُم ّْيَق ِ
ْرشَم وُقمناّف
52. Properties of Ism – Status | Special case
Neither Heavy nor Light
Special case: Any Ism starting with ال can be labelled as “irrelevant”, i.e.,
neither heavy nor light because
ال doesn’t like to have TANWEEN, but
When an ism has ال then it isn’t considered light because
• ISM starting with ال can have /n/ sound at the end by having ن at the end.
Examples:

And He misleads only those who disobey Allah (i.e., the defiantly disobedient); who break
the covenant of Allah after contracting it and sever that which Allah has ordered to be joined
and cause corruption on earth. It is those who are the losers. How can you disbelieve in
Allah? Whereas you were dead and He brought you to life; then He will give you death,
then He will bring you [back] to life again, and then to Him you will be returned.

78. Properties of Ism – Status | Flexibility
In terms of Status, each ISM has 3 states: R, N and J
In MUSLIM Chart, MUSLIM has different forms for R N and
J.
Flexibility of ISM status can be understood using
different analogies. We will discuss two of them.
1st Analogy for understanding is to compare with
different forms of verbs in English
Eat-Ate-Eaten | Catch-Caught-Caught | Cut-Cut-Cut
2nd Analogy can be of different people’s looks as per
their emotions (e.g., happy, neutral, sad):
Person A: happy , neutral , sad
Person B: happy , neutral , sad
Person C: happy , neutral , sad

79. Properties of Ism – Status | Flexibility
Flexibility only pertains to ISMs having
ENDING SOUND (not necessarily singular
bcz broken plural words also have ending sound!).

Fully
Flexible
• Most ISMS are here, ~85%.
• A different LOOK for each state (i.e., R, N & J) of Status.
• Can be either Heavy or Light.
ُابَتِك ، ْعیِمَس
Partly
Flexible
• One LOOK for R, and another LOOK for both N & J
• Cannot (i) be Heavy & (ii) have a ‘zair’ at the end.
• Name of Places: ُریاض ، ُباكستان
• Non-Arab Proper & Feminine Names:
ُادریس
Non-
Flexible
• All forms of (different) Status look the same!
• Only one LOOK for three states (i.e., R, N & J) of Status.
• Words ending with Shortened-ALIF:
، یاْنُد ، يٰیْحَی ، يٰوسُم
ٰ
ْربُك
ي
• ISM Mosool: Al-lazi Family الذي
• Pointing words: THIS, ذاٰھ
80. Partly Flexible ISMs’ 3 Statuses have 2
Endings!
Partly flexible ISM ends with ُُّ in Raf’a form, and َُّ in the NASB and JARR forms.
So, both Nasb & Jarr look the same as we saw this before in ending combinations.
For identification, we need to know about following few categories of partly-flexible ISMs.
Non-Arab names EXCEPT three-letter non-Arab names with a Sakoon on the middle letter!
• Arab names are fully-flexible, and four Arab prophet’s names mentioned in the Quran are:
All feminine names and Masculine names that have no feminine counterpart, EXCEPT three-letter
names with a Sakoon on the middle letter!
Proper names of places EXCEPT three-letter names with a Sakoon on the middle letter!
There are certain word patterns that are partly-flexible. We will look at these patterns in our study of Sarf.
NOTE: A partly-flexible Ism can be made fully-flexible in two ways:
by adding an ال
by making it a مضاف (will discuss later when studying fragments!)

82. Non-Flexible ISMs’ 3 Statuses have 1 Ending!
Non-Flexible ISMs’ Endings all look the same for three Statuses (i.e., R,N & J)
They look the same in the رفع status, the نصب status, and the جر status.
For identification, we need to know about following few categories of Non-flexible ISMs.
ISMs that end in Shortened Alif, i.e., Alif Maqsurah - ْ
فِلَ ْ
اْل
ة َورُصْقَمْال ( ٌَ
ى ) or a normal
Alif (ا).
• E.g.: ٰ
ى َرْسُی - ٰ
ى َرْسُع - ٰ
ىَسوُم – اَیْند
Ism-e-Mawsool (part of MORE, i.e., 7th Ism-type)
All of the pointer words (Ism-e-Isharah) in the singular and plural forms
(part of MORE, i.e., 7th Ism-type).
83. The Alif when it occurs at the end of a word is
called a "shortened alif".
It is usually written as the letter ي without
its dots, i.e., Alif Maqsurah ى ٌَ
It can also be written as a normal alif, e.g., الدنیا
Alif mamdudah is alif followed by hamzah (i.e.,
اء) which occurs at the end of a kalimah, e.g.,
أسماء, حسناء
Bonus: Alif tanween is the alif that appears at
the end of Mansoob Ism nakirah (i.e., indefinite
Ism in Nasb Status), e.g., اابَتِك
,
ایر ِ
رَس
This alif is not placed if the word ends with taa
marbutah or hamzah.
Shortened Alif (i.e., normal Alif &
Alif Maqsurah) and
Elongated Alif (i.e., Alif
Mamdudah)
84. Ism Mawsool
Part of Ism’s More-type!
These are non-flexible (or invariant, i.e., exhibit no inflection* w.r.t. to status).
That is, these can be in Raf’a, Nasb or Jarr status, but they all look same.
* Inflection is a change in the form of a word to express a grammatical function or attribute such as status, number,
gender, type or tense. E.g., in English: (1) write, wrote, written (2) read, read, read.
85. Ism-e-Isharah – ّاشارهِاسم (Pointing Isms)
Part of Ism’s More-type!
Pointer Isms are proper and
Used to point at other Isms,
E.g.: These tables, this chair, that wall, etc.
There is no long-distance relationship between Pointer Ism (e.g., this) and its
victim Ism (e.g., chair).
Following six non-flexible pointing Isms are important to remember:
Near: اَذََٰه This(M) ّ
ِهِذََٰه This(F) ِّء َ
َُلؤََٰه These(M/F)
Far: َّكِلََٰذ That(M) َّكْلِت That(F) َّكِئََٰلوُأ Those(M/F)

Definitions
LOVE: Heart inclination and preferring the beloved [Allah] over all other things.
Continuous occupation with Him and what He wants (i.e., ALLAH's commands), and doing everything for His sake, that is, enslaving oneself to ALLAH alone and freeing oneself from any other thing.
Engaging in seeking His pleasure through your heart and continuous remembrance of Him by the tongue.
FEAR (Khawf): It's a distressing state of mind that is based on an expectation of negative outcomes.
Heart’s determination to avoid Allah’s wrath and divine retribution.
Being mindful of Allah’s punishment in every breath by strongly believing in destiny.
HOPE (al-Raja’): It's an optimistic state of mind that is based on an expectation of positive outcomes.
Heart’s determination to have Allah’s pardon on the divine judgment.
Hope must be accompanied by action and has many fruitful virtues if it is correctly entertained.
Two essential kinds of hope:
The hope of a righteous person in seeking the reward from his Lord
The hope of a wrongdoer in seeking his Lord’s forgiveness.
The repugnant kind of hope:
It's represented in the behavior of a person who exceeds the limits in committing sins while hoping to attain Allah’s mercy without repentance. This act is called arrogance or deception [Ghurur] and false wishes.
