ZARI ZARI
Zari sector has its strong presence in
concentrated pockets of Howrah, South
24 Paraganas and Hoogly districts in
West Bengal. This sector is known for
long tradition of craftsmanship and
attracts work orders from all over the
country and abroad. West Bengal
with its manufacturing strength of
finished zari work and skilled artisans
in large numbers can change the socio
economic fabric of the State. Sector
Leadership Project aims to enhance
the market share of zari in the national
domestic market from18% to 35%

– Sankrail, Panchla, Uluberia, Domjur, Jagatballavpur
and Bagnan
• South 24 Paraganas: Total units 54110, Employment:
195265 – Budge Budge, Bishnupur, Baruipur, Canning ,
Diamond Harbour, Falta and Bangur
• Hoogly: Total units ; 6800, Employment 31500 –
Jangipara, Khanakul, Chanditala , Arambag, Pursura and
Dhaniakali
• Burdwan, Raina : Total units 1400, Employment;6000
Skilled HR
• Skilled artisans in large numbers who can offer finished
zari work
Challenges
• Un-organized and un structured nature of the sector
• Lack of infrastructure like work sheds, display centers,
modern computer aided machinery.
• No direct linkages with the market.
• Absence of design development with respect to modern
style and fashion.
• Training Skill development needs of new generation
workers.
Accelerators and Road map
• Operationalizing Sankrail Zari Hub by mid 2016
• Developing 10 zari clusters at Budge Budge ,Raina,
Kulpi, Canning, Panchla, Uday Narayanpur, Uluberiya ,
Khanakul, Chanditala, and Dhaniakhali within 2017
• Provision of necessary infrastructure in zari clusters like
common production center, CAD support, packaging unit
and display area
• Creation of state level Special Purpose Vehicle with
stakeholders to develop strategy for skill up gradation,
design development, marketing intervention etc
• Special focus on Zari in State Design Centre
• Developing contemporary and marketable designs
through tie up with reputed institutions like NIFT, NID
• Buyer-seller interaction point along with central display
centre at Rajarhat
• Government supported participation in national and
international trade fairs
• Large scale skill development initiative for new generation
artisans for zari embroidery
• Capacity development through training in Computer
Aided Design operations and new technologies
