The Institute of Technology, Dundalk was founded in 1970,
and provides higher level education in the northeast region of
Ireland, at Bachelor, Masters and Doctorate levels. Dundalk
Institute of Technology is one of 14 Institutes of Technology in
Ireland.
Institutes of Technology award university-level degrees that
are of a high academic standard, but that are also orientated
towards the demands of professional practice. The Institutes of
Technology engage in research, consultancy and development
work with industrial partners and academic institutions, both
at home and abroad.
Programmes at Institutes of Technology are determined mainly

2 Computer Diploma holders (equivalent to Level 7*)
with IELTS 6.0 or 65% in DkIT exam may in future be
allowed into H Dip in Computing level 8. Check this!

Scholarships and Tuition Fees
There will be a scholarship scheme available to students
studying particular programmes at DkIT for intake September
2012. The details of this scholarship scheme are as follows:
1 Scholarships are in the form of free student
accommodation and will be available for students who
enter Year 1 of programmes open to International
Students in the schools of Engineering, Science and
Nursing and, Computing.
2 The accommodation is on-campus and is based on two
people sharing.
3 The scholarship will be available to students for each
year of their undergraduate studies so long as they
successfully complete the previous year of study and so
long as there is no breach of the Institute, or campus
accommodation rules or regulations.
4 The accommodation will be provided free of
charge from the start of Semester 1 until the end of
Semester 2.
5 Where a student enters the DkIT Foundation
Programme before entering undergraduate studies, the
scholarship will not be available until first year of
undergraduate studies commencement.
6 Where on-campus accommodation cannot be secured,
alternative suitable accommodation will be made
available.

All international (non-exchange) students travelling from a
non-EU/EEA state (or from Switzerland), will be required to
complete immigration formalities with the Garda National
Immigration Bureau, after completing registration at DkIT.

* A letter from DkIT indicating your student status, start
date, and duration of your programme at DkIT;

Accommodation
International students are encouraged to stay at Halls of
Residence in the first year of their studies here. Staying at halls
of residence is more convenient in your first year then looking
for accommodation. Apartments are furnished, and the
standard of accommodation is generally consistent. It is a good
way to meet other new students.
International students can choose from 3 halls of residence;
1 Directly on campus - Student Village
2 A short walk off-campus Setanta Apartments –
shared bedroom basis,
3 Mourne View Hall (individual bedrooms), 10 minute
walk from Campus
The halls of residence are privately owned and managed, and
are independent of DkIT.
However, where DkIT International Office can help with
enquiries to hall-of-residence management, we are happy to
help.
Accommodation is also available in private houses close to
DkIT. International students are strongly advised to only
select rented houses fitted with a house alarm.
Where requested, the staff of the International Office can
provide a listing of privately-owned properties.
There are some options available for International students to
live with families for Homestay. Typical rates for 2012 are
€180/week for bed and board.

* Aldi, (Newry Road, Dundalk and The Ramparts,
Dundalk)
* Lidl, (Avenue Road, Dundalk and St. Helena’s Quay,
Dundalk.)
* Dunnes’ Stores (The Marshes Shopping Centre,
Dundalk – sells groceries, clothes, household
furnishings and kitchen utensil). Also Dunnes Stores
close to DkIT on Hoey’s Lane (mainly groceries).
* Tesco (The Old Shopping Centre”, beside McDonald’s
on Dublin Street and in The Long Walk Shopping
Centre” in town centre. These offer reasonably
reasonable value by Irish standards and have a wide
choice of goods.
There are a number of shops offering hardware, sports and
leisure goods and pcs located in The Retail Park, a 10 minute
walk from DkIT.

10. Living in Dundalk

Climate and Clothing
Ireland has a temperate climate. Summer temperatures range
typically 16 – 20oC. Winter temperatures are generally mild,
but wet. Sub-zero temperatures are uncommon in Winter.
Waterproof clothing is essential.
Working in Ireland
Students who are not citizents of the EU/EEA country/or
Switzerland, and who wish to work part-time in Ireland, must
be registered as a full-time student on a programme, leading
to a recognised qualification.
You will require a valid Garda National Immigration Bureau
card with stamp 2, and must show evidence of having applied
for a PPS (Personal Public Services) number prior to starting
work. You can work up to 20 hours per week during term-
time, and up to 40 hours per week outside of term-time.
Students from EU member states may work without any
special permission. Application for PPS number is only required
from Erasmus exchange students seeking part-time, or full-
time employment.
If applying for a PPS number, you are required to show:
* Passport (or National Identity Card, or Immigration
Card)
* Photo ID
* Evidence of Address in Ireland (i.e household utility bill,
official letter, financial statement, lease agreement,
employer’s letter etc.)
The International Office will assist you with any enquiries
relating to your PPS Number application.
Programmes at the Institute require dedication, both in class,
and after hours. In order to make best use of your time in
Ireland, and to ensure fullest participation in all aspects of
student life, you are advised against excessive part-time
working.
Go International Society
The International Student Society at DkIT is open to all
students, and is a great way to get involved in student events,
and get to know people from all over the world.
