CREATING A
SUSTAINABLE
ENERGY
FUTURE
Aberdeen City Council is committed
to the development of a sustainable
economy, job creation and preservation,
and to building and maintaining quality
of life and equality of opportunity for
our citizens. It is for this reason that
I convened the Oil and Gas Summit
in February (2015) and why we are
vigorously pursuing an effective City Deal
for large scale investment in the city.
For these same reasons the City Council has been
active in renewables for more than 15 years. We have
long recognised how this exciting new growth area
would add to our existing industrial base and be a
key contributor to building a 21st Century sustainable
energy industry.
Our energy industry is critical to the sustainability
of our economy, our quality of life and opportunity
for our citizens. Aberdeen’s energy skills are
transferable and the rise of new renewable
technologies offers huge opportunities both at home
and overseas.
In the past 15 years we have seen encouraging
progress. Aberdeen City and Shire is now the largest
employer in offshore wind in Scotland by some
margin. This is a significant achievement and one
we can be proud of. Not only are our companies and
organisations making inroads into offshore markets
but also into diverse fields such as bio-energy, heat,
solar, biomass, and electricity storage. In addition,
we are making Aberdeen an attractive location for
pioneering energy projects – the City Council’s own
H2 hydrogen projects and the European Offshore
Wind Deployment Centre in which AREG is a joint
venture partner being the most prominent.
However there are still challenges with the
development and integration of renewables and these
must not be underestimated. I am convinced that our
energy industry can play a vital role in addressing and
overcoming the challenges by applying the innovations
and solutions in which our people are so well versed
and for which Aberdeen is globally renowned.

Chair of AREG
AREG looks forward to another year in
the renewables industry with customary
enthusiasm. As with every other
year we are aware that there will be
opportunities and successes but also
challenges and risks.
In 2014 -2015 Aberdeen has continued to develop and
consolidate its position as a globally competitive
energy capital in terms of supply chain and UK and
international markets. Also in 2014 full consent was
awarded for the European Offshore Wind Deployment
Centre (EOWDC), a project that will be very important
for delivering government and industry ambitions for
offshore wind. We also recently saw Europe’s largest
fleet of hydrogen buses appear on Aberdeen’s streets.
I am aware that many of you - our members - are
facing particular challenges as you endeavour to
win renewable energy business. A recent challenge
has been the decline in industry certainty regarding
support mechanisms however some of the challenges
are the same as they have always been. These
include consenting and development timescales,
improving engineering and technology solutions,
finance and grid access and connections. If the
renewable energy technologies are to prosper these
challenges still need to be addressed and that will
require action by all interested parties: government,
regulators, industry, technology developers and
financiers.
In this context AREG will continue to play its part by
informing and promoting our membership and by
continuing our lobbying, promotion, intervention,
influence and communication activities. We will also
OPPORTUNITIES
AND CHALLENGES
IN 2015

continue to work closely with Aberdeen
City Council to develop new events tailored
to our members’ very broad spectrum of
needs, specialities and interest. These
events will feature the best market
intelligence and information available,
highlighting diversification opportunities
and assisting members to forge new
relationships and explore new markets
and development opportunities.
I look forward to leading AREG for another
year and also to working with, and on your
behalf, to realise the economic potential
of the renewable energy industries in
Aberdeen City and Shire.

Aberdeen City Council
Aberdeen City Council aims to play an active
role in supporting local renewable activities and
developments. The city continues to be renowned as a
global energy hub, not least due to its long association
with the international oil and gas operations, but
also due to its continuing and active involvement in
renewable energy.
The Council was instrumental in establishing the
Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG) and
continues to support its innovative work within
renewables industry. The Council is therefore pleased
that AREG’s membership continues to grow from
strength to strength.
In order to facilitate and promote the development of
Aberdeen’s renewable energy capability, the Council
is able to draw upon a number of functions which
showcase the innovative research, technological
skill, knowledge and commitment which exists in the
city’s academic institutions and businesses. This is
demonstrated in the Aberdeen Hydrogen Project which
the Council is leading with a number of high profile
partners, including AREG. The Council seeks to promote
these capabilities domestically and internationally
through a range of strategic partnerships and projects
as well as its international trade and investment
activities. The latter includes hosting inward delegations
as well as providing seminars and supporting trade
missions with partner organisations.
Through these strategic partnerships and relationships,
the Council aims to support Aberdeen’s energy industry
in identifying as well as exploiting opportunities for
business at home and globally.
Aberdeen’s businesses are already actively involved in
the full spectrum of renewables applications including
offshore and onshore wind, wave and tidal and biomass
technologies. Our energy industry also excels in leading
energy consortia and joint ventures – a collaborative
approach that is increasingly important in the
development of renewable energy.
Aberdeen City Council is interested in innovations and
approaches from energy businesses, organisations
and institutions from any location who are interested
in cooperative ventures to develop renewable energy
opportunities.

Aberdeen Heat and Power
Company Ltd
Aberdeen Heat and Power Co Ltd is an independent,
not-for-profit company established to develop and
manage combined heat and power (CHP) schemes.
CHP is the simultaneous generation of electric power
and usable heat in a single process. A CHP system
generates electricity locally and captures the heat
produced to provide space heating and hot water to
nearby buildings. This achieves an efficiency of around
85% for the combined production of electricity and heat
at the point of use.
Because the high efficiency of CHP systems result in
low carbon emissions, the modern small-scale CHP
plants developed by Aberdeen Heat and Power are
accredited as producers of “green” electricity. The
company trades in the electricity it generates locally.
Projects completed:
• Stockethill project supplying heat to 288 flats in
4 high rise blocks of flats, has been extended to
include larger generation capacity and connection to
a further 4 blocks comprising 380 flats.
• A new energy centre has been constructed at
Tillydrone to initially supply heat to 7 multi-storey
blocks comprising 470 flats. This centre is built with
capacity to expand to the wider Tillydrone area in
future.
• Hazlehead project supplying heat to 4 high rise
blocks of flats, a sheltered housing scheme,
Hazelhead Pavilion, Hazlehead Academy and
swimming pool.
• Seaton project supplying heat to 1200 flats within
14 high rise blocks, the Beach Leisure Centre,
Beach Ballroom and Linx Ice Rink. The District Heat
Network has now been expanded to supply another 6
public buildings including the Town House.
• Heat to supply Aberdeen Sports Village and new
Aquatics Centre.

Aberdeen International Airport Ltd
Aberdeen International Airport served 3.76 million
passengers in 2014 – the busiest year in the airport’s
history and an 8% growth on 2013 levels. Deemed the
‘gateway to Europe’s energy capital’, it is the world’s
busiest commercial heliport, transporting more than
500,000 passengers in support of the North Sea oil
and gas industry. Serving more than 48 destinations
directly, the airport is one of the best connected
regional airports in the UK offering 25 hub departures
each day.
A complex operation, the airport operates four runways
– one main and three helicopter runways – and five
terminals, three of which are specific to helicopter
operations and another for processing fixed wing
charter flights for oil operations in Shetland.
In 2013, the airport announced a multimillion pound
re-development project which will be its biggest
transformation in 35 years. The redevelopment will
see the airport offer a brand new look and feel to
the terminal environment, with enhanced features
including changes to passenger lounge areas, retail
opportunities, a refreshed arrivals product with new
reclaim belts and a new security search area.

Aberdeenshire Council
Aberdeenshire Council’s Environmental Policy was
re-published in May 2015. The corporate policy aligns
with the Climate Change Act 2009 Public Bodies
Duties and articulates local commitments across the
sustainable development agenda. The Council has
approved a CO2 reduction target of 44% by 2020.
The Council’s approach to energy is one of transition
consistent with UK and Scottish objectives and targets.
Aberdeenshire Council is working collaboratively with
key regional partners to co-ordinate the production
of a regional Sustainable Energy Action Plan. The
aim of the SEAP is to deliver an energy vision for the
North East predicated on energy security, reduced
environmental impacts and energy affordability. From
2016 Aberdeenshire Council, along with the rest of the
Public Sector, will be subject to mandatory reporting to
the Scottish Government under the Climate Change Act.
With around one quarter of Scotland’s arable land, a
large wind resource, water resources and areas with
high levels of tree cover, Aberdeenshire has significant
potential to produce heat, electricity and, indirectly,
hydrogen, from renewable resources.
The Council recognises the environmental and
economic benefits of reduced dependence on
hydrocarbon fuels. It is working with a range
of partners to encourage local ownership of
renewable energy schemes to the benefit of the local
economy. The level of locally owned wind turbines in
Aberdeenshire is the highest in the UK.
The Council continues to support the development of
the wood fuel industry utilising Aberdeenshire’s natural
resources to meet growing demand for renewable
sources of heat for commercial, agricultural and
domestic uses.
A programme of installing electric vehicle charging
points across Aberdeenshire is underway.

Current2Current Ltd
Current2Current is an energy developer applying a
novel use of innovative technology to harness power
from natural tidal flows.
Established in 2007, Current2Current (C2C) has
designed its tidal power converter to be very compact
enabling operation, maintenance and installation costs
to be minimised.
A simple construction, the omni-directional converter
works on the principle of accelerating the tidal flow, not
unlike a jet engine. The flow is then passed through a
shrouded turbine; a process designed to capture extra
energy from outside the capture envelope of the device
thereby increasing generating efficiency.
The 6m diameter converter has a predicted output of
100 kW with the 12m diameter unit reaching 400 kW
output. An array of tidal power converters is expected
to produce between 1-2 MW of clean energy per acre,
enough to power around 2000 homes.
The Current2Current tidal power converter also
provides a number of distinct advantages over
alternative tidal power solutions, all resulting in
optimum production of electricity together with a
significant reduction in costs:
• It produces electricity from an extended range of
costal sites.
• It produces electricity from currents flowing at a
slower velocity than the accepted minimum.
• It has less idle time during slack tides.

H2 Aberdeen
Aberdeen City Council has a strategic aim to build on its
position as a leading energy city now and in the future,
by attracting innovative renewable energy developers
to the region. Hydrogen is an important opportunity
here.
Through the strategic hydrogen programme, H2
Aberdeen, a series of targeted investments have been
made to help Aberdeen secure a position as a leading
deployment centre for hydrogen technologies.
Aberdeen is home to Europe’s largest hydrogen fuel cell
bus fleet, with 10 buses operating on the City’s roads,
supported by the UK’s first fully integrated hydrogen
production and bus refuelling station and a dedicated
maintenance facility within the city centre. In addition
the Council operates two hydrogen diesel hybrid vans.
The bus fleet emit only water from their exhaust and
operate with reduced noise. The hybrid vans emit 59g/
km carbon dioxide (CO2) under test, which equates to
a 70% reduction in CO2 and 40% reduction in nitrogen
oxides (NOx) compared to a diesel equivalent. Thus both
vehicle types are helping to reduce harmful pollutants
within the City. This is important for Aberdeen which has
three designated air quality management areas declared
due to exceedances of national air quality objectives for
nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and PM10.
The City Region’s strategic approach outlines the
key actions required over the next 10 years to ensure
Aberdeen is a world-class energy hub leading a low
carbon economy and at the forefront of hydrogen
technology.

  • 3. CREATING A SUSTAINABLE ENERGY FUTURE Aberdeen City Council is committed to the development of a sustainable economy, job creation and preservation, and to building and maintaining quality of life and equality of opportunity for our citizens. It is for this reason that I convened the Oil and Gas Summit in February (2015) and why we are vigorously pursuing an effective City Deal for large scale investment in the city. For these same reasons the City Council has been active in renewables for more than 15 years. We have long recognised how this exciting new growth area would add to our existing industrial base and be a key contributor to building a 21st Century sustainable energy industry. Our energy industry is critical to the sustainability of our economy, our quality of life and opportunity for our citizens. Aberdeen’s energy skills are transferable and the rise of new renewable technologies offers huge opportunities both at home and overseas. In the past 15 years we have seen encouraging progress. Aberdeen City and Shire is now the largest employer in offshore wind in Scotland by some margin. This is a significant achievement and one we can be proud of. Not only are our companies and organisations making inroads into offshore markets but also into diverse fields such as bio-energy, heat, solar, biomass, and electricity storage. In addition, we are making Aberdeen an attractive location for pioneering energy projects – the City Council’s own H2 hydrogen projects and the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre in which AREG is a joint venture partner being the most prominent. However there are still challenges with the development and integration of renewables and these must not be underestimated. I am convinced that our energy industry can play a vital role in addressing and overcoming the challenges by applying the innovations and solutions in which our people are so well versed and for which Aberdeen is globally renowned. Councillor Jenny Laing Leader Aberdeen City Council AREG Members Directory 1
  • 4. 2 AREG Members Directory Jean Morrison Chair of AREG AREG looks forward to another year in the renewables industry with customary enthusiasm. As with every other year we are aware that there will be opportunities and successes but also challenges and risks. In 2014 -2015 Aberdeen has continued to develop and consolidate its position as a globally competitive energy capital in terms of supply chain and UK and international markets. Also in 2014 full consent was awarded for the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre (EOWDC), a project that will be very important for delivering government and industry ambitions for offshore wind. We also recently saw Europe’s largest fleet of hydrogen buses appear on Aberdeen’s streets. I am aware that many of you - our members - are facing particular challenges as you endeavour to win renewable energy business. A recent challenge has been the decline in industry certainty regarding support mechanisms however some of the challenges are the same as they have always been. These include consenting and development timescales, improving engineering and technology solutions, finance and grid access and connections. If the renewable energy technologies are to prosper these challenges still need to be addressed and that will require action by all interested parties: government, regulators, industry, technology developers and financiers. In this context AREG will continue to play its part by informing and promoting our membership and by continuing our lobbying, promotion, intervention, influence and communication activities. We will also OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES IN 2015
  • 5. AREG Members Directory 3 continue to work closely with Aberdeen City Council to develop new events tailored to our members’ very broad spectrum of needs, specialities and interest. These events will feature the best market intelligence and information available, highlighting diversification opportunities and assisting members to forge new relationships and explore new markets and development opportunities. I look forward to leading AREG for another year and also to working with, and on your behalf, to realise the economic potential of the renewable energy industries in Aberdeen City and Shire.

The city continues to be renowned as a global energy hub, not least due to its long association with the international oil and gas operations, but also due to its continuing and active involvement in renewable energy. The Council was instrumental in establishing the Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG) and continues to support its innovative work within renewables industry. The Council is therefore pleased that AREG’s membership continues to grow from strength to strength. In order to facilitate and promote the development of Aberdeen’s renewable energy capability, the Council is able to draw upon a number of functions which showcase the innovative research, technological skill, knowledge and commitment which exists in the city’s academic institutions and businesses. This is demonstrated in the Aberdeen Hydrogen Project which the Council is leading with a number of high profile partners, including AREG. The Council seeks to promote these capabilities domestically and internationally through a range of strategic partnerships and projects as well as its international trade and investment activities. The latter includes hosting inward delegations as well as providing seminars and supporting trade missions with partner organisations. Through these strategic partnerships and relationships, the Council aims to support Aberdeen’s energy industry in identifying as well as exploiting opportunities for business at home and globally. Aberdeen’s businesses are already actively involved in the full spectrum of renewables applications including offshore and onshore wind, wave and tidal and biomass technologies. Our energy industry also excels in leading energy consortia and joint ventures – a collaborative approach that is increasingly important in the development of renewable energy. Aberdeen City Council is interested in innovations and approaches from energy businesses, organisations and institutions from any location who are interested in cooperative ventures to develop renewable energy opportunities.

CHP is the simultaneous generation of electric power and usable heat in a single process. A CHP system generates electricity locally and captures the heat produced to provide space heating and hot water to nearby buildings. This achieves an efficiency of around 85% for the combined production of electricity and heat at the point of use. Because the high efficiency of CHP systems result in low carbon emissions, the modern small-scale CHP plants developed by Aberdeen Heat and Power are accredited as producers of “green” electricity. The company trades in the electricity it generates locally. Projects completed: • Stockethill project supplying heat to 288 flats in 4 high rise blocks of flats, has been extended to include larger generation capacity and connection to a further 4 blocks comprising 380 flats. • A new energy centre has been constructed at Tillydrone to initially supply heat to 7 multi-storey blocks comprising 470 flats. This centre is built with capacity to expand to the wider Tillydrone area in future. • Hazlehead project supplying heat to 4 high rise blocks of flats, a sheltered housing scheme, Hazelhead Pavilion, Hazlehead Academy and swimming pool. • Seaton project supplying heat to 1200 flats within 14 high rise blocks, the Beach Leisure Centre, Beach Ballroom and Linx Ice Rink. The District Heat Network has now been expanded to supply another 6 public buildings including the Town House. • Heat to supply Aberdeen Sports Village and new Aquatics Centre.

Deemed the ‘gateway to Europe’s energy capital’, it is the world’s busiest commercial heliport, transporting more than 500,000 passengers in support of the North Sea oil and gas industry. Serving more than 48 destinations directly, the airport is one of the best connected regional airports in the UK offering 25 hub departures each day. A complex operation, the airport operates four runways – one main and three helicopter runways – and five terminals, three of which are specific to helicopter operations and another for processing fixed wing charter flights for oil operations in Shetland. In 2013, the airport announced a multimillion pound re-development project which will be its biggest transformation in 35 years. The redevelopment will see the airport offer a brand new look and feel to the terminal environment, with enhanced features including changes to passenger lounge areas, retail opportunities, a refreshed arrivals product with new reclaim belts and a new security search area.

The corporate policy aligns with the Climate Change Act 2009 Public Bodies Duties and articulates local commitments across the sustainable development agenda. The Council has approved a CO2 reduction target of 44% by 2020. The Council’s approach to energy is one of transition consistent with UK and Scottish objectives and targets. Aberdeenshire Council is working collaboratively with key regional partners to co-ordinate the production of a regional Sustainable Energy Action Plan. The aim of the SEAP is to deliver an energy vision for the North East predicated on energy security, reduced environmental impacts and energy affordability. From 2016 Aberdeenshire Council, along with the rest of the Public Sector, will be subject to mandatory reporting to the Scottish Government under the Climate Change Act. With around one quarter of Scotland’s arable land, a large wind resource, water resources and areas with high levels of tree cover, Aberdeenshire has significant potential to produce heat, electricity and, indirectly, hydrogen, from renewable resources. The Council recognises the environmental and economic benefits of reduced dependence on hydrocarbon fuels. It is working with a range of partners to encourage local ownership of renewable energy schemes to the benefit of the local economy. The level of locally owned wind turbines in Aberdeenshire is the highest in the UK. The Council continues to support the development of the wood fuel industry utilising Aberdeenshire’s natural resources to meet growing demand for renewable sources of heat for commercial, agricultural and domestic uses. A programme of installing electric vehicle charging points across Aberdeenshire is underway.

  • 43. Current2Current Ltd Current2Current is an energy developer applying a novel use of innovative technology to harness power from natural tidal flows. Established in 2007, Current2Current (C2C) has designed its tidal power converter to be very compact enabling operation, maintenance and installation costs to be minimised. A simple construction, the omni-directional converter works on the principle of accelerating the tidal flow, not unlike a jet engine. The flow is then passed through a shrouded turbine; a process designed to capture extra energy from outside the capture envelope of the device thereby increasing generating efficiency. The 6m diameter converter has a predicted output of 100 kW with the 12m diameter unit reaching 400 kW output. An array of tidal power converters is expected to produce between 1-2 MW of clean energy per acre, enough to power around 2000 homes. The Current2Current tidal power converter also provides a number of distinct advantages over alternative tidal power solutions, all resulting in optimum production of electricity together with a significant reduction in costs: • It produces electricity from an extended range of costal sites. • It produces electricity from currents flowing at a slower velocity than the accepted minimum. • It has less idle time during slack tides. AREG Members Directory 59 H2 Aberdeen Aberdeen City Council has a strategic aim to build on its position as a leading energy city now and in the future, by attracting innovative renewable energy developers to the region. Hydrogen is an important opportunity here. Through the strategic hydrogen programme, H2 Aberdeen, a series of targeted investments have been made to help Aberdeen secure a position as a leading deployment centre for hydrogen technologies. Aberdeen is home to Europe’s largest hydrogen fuel cell bus fleet, with 10 buses operating on the City’s roads, supported by the UK’s first fully integrated hydrogen production and bus refuelling station and a dedicated maintenance facility within the city centre. In addition the Council operates two hydrogen diesel hybrid vans. The bus fleet emit only water from their exhaust and operate with reduced noise. The hybrid vans emit 59g/ km carbon dioxide (CO2) under test, which equates to a 70% reduction in CO2 and 40% reduction in nitrogen oxides (NOx) compared to a diesel equivalent. Thus both vehicle types are helping to reduce harmful pollutants within the City. This is important for Aberdeen which has three designated air quality management areas declared due to exceedances of national air quality objectives for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and PM10. The City Region’s strategic approach outlines the key actions required over the next 10 years to ensure Aberdeen is a world-class energy hub leading a low carbon economy and at the forefront of hydrogen technology.
