Education of Immigrant students
in American public schools
Abdullah Mosallam
Thesis: Despite the efforts made by the American government concerning the
education of immigrant students, such as the implementation of " No Child Left
Behind", these students are not being treated equally to other students, nor are they
getting the same quality of education they deserve.
History and facts about the education of
immigrants.
1. Immigrant students get stereotyped:
Maria Mexican girl
2. Many teachers lack the
knowledge of other cultures:
"Culture is more than just artifacts. Differences become more
meaningful as one goes beneath the surface. What is
beneath the surface is termed invisible culture or
deep Culture, and it includes cultural traditions, beliefs,
values, norms, and symbolic meanings” (Ford & Moore).
What are the effects of non equal
education on immigrant students
I.Emotional effects
1. Students lose the motivation to
learn
2.Students feel that they are being
discriminated by teachers,
administrators, and even students.
Educational effects:
1. Lower level classes
2. Not the same opportunity to
succeed
Solutions 1. Come up with a new policy, which requires
the teachers and administrators to learn more about the
students' backgrounds and cultures: Suggest to
implement a different policy other than NCLB. Let's call
it for example: No Culture Left Behind.
2. Implement multicultural studies in public
schools:
