2. Diabetes is a disorder caused by inadequate
production, or defective action of the
hormone insulin in the body. This leads to
higher-than-normal glucose (sugar) levels
in the blood, some of which also overflows
into the urine. In the long run, it can lead to
diseases of other organs such as eyes, heart,
kidneys, nerves and feet.
3.
4. There are three main types of diabetes-
1.Type 1-Insulin Dependent Diabetes.
2.Type 2-Non Insulin Dependent
Diabetes.
Type 3-Gestational Diabetes mellitus
(GDM).
5. Type 1
The Pancreas does not
produce insulin at all.
The patient therefore needs
to take insulin injections
lifelong.
Basically occur in
Childhood
Type 2
The Pancreas Produce Little
amount of Insulin.
In early Stage -Lifestyle
Modification &
In Later Stage-Antidiabetic
Medications.
Generally occur in
Adulthood
6. • Women who are overweight or obese, have a
strong family history of diabetes and have
delivered a big baby (weighing >3.5 kg) in
the past are at high risk of developing
gestational diabetes. However, all Asian
Indian women are at high risk of developing
gestational diabetes, notwithstanding the
presence or absence of the above risk factors.
7. Women seem to have higher prevalence
in certain population due to increased
obesity. Today in India, diabetes is found
almost equally in men and women.
8. Overweight and obesity are major risk
factors for the development of type 2
diabetes. However, even lean individuals
can develop type 2 diabetes, especially in
India.
9. People who have diabetes are more likely
to have problems with poor blood flow
(circulation) or loss of feeling (sensation)
in their feet. Poor circulation to the foot
may lead to sores that are slower to heal.
Loss of feeling or sensation is caused by
damage to the nerves in the lower legs
and feet.
10. heart disease and stroke
loss of feeling and pain (nerve damage) –
causing problems with sex
foot problems – like sores and infections
vision loss and blindness
miscarriage and stillbirth
problems with your kidneys
11. Maintain Healthy Body Weight.
Be Physically active for Atleast 30mins a Day.
Eat Healthy Diet with reduce intake of Sugar, salt &
Saturated Fats.
Avoid Alcohol & Smoking.
Test Blood Glucose & HBA1C test Regularly.
Consult your Dr from time to time.
12. Yes. This is a disorder either due to
defective action or deficiency of insulin.
It is life style disorder. When the blood
sugar is kept under control, a diabetic can
have a healthy, normal life.
13. If you have diabetes, being active makes your body
more sensitive to insulin (the hormone that allows cells
in your body to use blood sugar for energy), which
helps manage your diabetes. Physical activity also
helps control blood sugar levels and lowers your risk of
heart disease and nerve damage
