Over the last couple of months in Tamaki Makaurau (Auckland), we have gone through an unsettling time with rosters being
reviewed to ensure that tangata are getting the support they need at the time they need. We have also had to make roster
changes so we can live within the funding levels we receive.
I want to thank every kaimahi, Kaitaataki and Kaiwhakahaere for being resilient and ensuring service to our tangata was not
negatively impacted on, during this time of change.

I recently spent time with Sehar, one of the
Behavioural Advisor Interns from the University of
Auckland. Sehar has been working at Whare Te
Whetumarama with tangata and kaimahi for several
months now to help tangata have more meaningful
days, to lessen their boredom, to encourage their
independence and to help improve the way kaimahi
are able to support and communicate with tangata in
the whare.
Losi, one of the kaimahi from the whare told me she is
enjoying learning to use the various techniques and
equipment that Sehar has introduced into the whare. It
makes work easier when tangata are involved in
activities they enjoy, can communicate their
preferences, and receive attention tailored to their
needs.
I am aware that both Sehar and Amy (the other intern)
will soon be available to other whare to support
behavioural management - please make them
welcome if they come to your whare. These two interns
are in their seventh year of study and can offer kaimahi
very specialised support - make use of it.
Supported Decision Making (SDM) is a method of
working with tangata that I am keen to see used in
TRT. SDM is about helping tangata to have as much
control of their own lives as possible, it’s about them
making as many choices as possible in their daily lives.
There are so many choices to make every day – what
time will I get up, what will I wear, what will I eat, what
will I do, who will I see*

Our thoughts and aroha go out to those of you
who have lost loved ones over the past months.
Some choices are hard - how will I find a flat and
flatmates, what study will I do, what pills will I take.
Some of the tangata we support can’t speak and
need help to communicate. Some of the tangata we
support can talk but need help to get their thoughts
put into words. An E-Learning resource to help
kaimahi understand the basics of SDM will be
available to kaimahi in the near future.
In the meantime, I encourage you to explore the
resources on using SDM that have been produced by
Auckland Disability Law - the link can be found later
in this newsletter.
Pou Tikanga have had very positive feedback from
kaimahi who have attended the Te Reo and Tikanga
Wananga around the regions. Thank you to the
kaimahi who have attended these wananga - it is
important as a kaupapa Maori organisation that we all
use te reo Maori and that we demonstrate TRT
tikanga Maori. Resources from the wananga will be
uploaded on to the intranet very soon.

The key focus for TRT remains on:
♦ Zero tolerance for harm.
♦ Improving communication throughout TRT by
giving better advance warning of changes, taking
the time to explain any changes and how they
might affect kaimahi. Communicating clearly and
regularly is the expected role of managers.

The new process for tangata medication sourcing and
delivery has kicked off in West Auckland and will soon be
rolled out to all Auckland whare. This will bring about a
fantastic improvement in the quality of service and support
provided to tangata as well as reliable and informative
support for kaimahi on medication queries or concerns. It will
streamline prescriptions between doctors and specialists
and prevent confusion and chasing around for corrections to
medication. Medication delivered to the whare door is a
great new service. Thank you to Joseph, Health Advisor, for
setting up this improved way of working.

Early in 2016, TRT were awarded a new contract with
Corrections to support the safe release of people from
prison.
TRT have recruited both externally and internally for this
contract and it has been very much a learning curve for us
all as to how this looks and works. The staff that are
permanently working to this contract have a different job
description and title and are known as Rehabilitation
Support Workers.
Their focus is to support the tangata back into the
community in the best way possible to assist them to
function in a safe manner and to ultimately prevent
reoffending when they return to their whanau or living
independently.
This contract has been overseen by Folau Kula (known to
many as Kula) who has been doing a fantastic job of
leading the team in this new venture.
A special welcome to Marshall Angus who was our
external candidate and first rehabilitation support worker
brought on board, also to the existing TRT kaimahi who
have either applied for this role or stepped in and
supported in their current roles in an acting position. Your
professionalism and the way you have all conducted
yourselves over this time has been truly commendable to
the values that underpin our service. Each and every one
of you has demonstrated Aroha, Tumanako, Whakapono
and Panekiretanga, and have shown TRT to be a service
we can all be very proud of. Ka rawe o mahi!

Teddy Wharawhara is the new Care Manager/Kaitaataki
for the Midlands rohe. Teddy has a broad experience in
the social services sector having previously worked for
not-for-profit organisations. He has also held a variety of
management roles throughout his career.

The Tangata Advisory Group is in full swing and there is
great learning from the issues that matter to them and
things they would like to see improved:
• Our vans are all dented and horrible. Why can’t we
have a nicer van so I can feel proud to go out?
• We want activities to do like basketball, crafts,
dances etc.
• We want to have our sports days and carry on playing
sports and do things like go bowling.
• Can all whare have a cat?
• There are complaints from the whare that the lawns
are not being done to the standard they used to be
and they are not looking nice enough.
• Can we have some plants and support for having
vegetable gardens again at whare?
Senior Managers are working with the Tangata Advisory
group to respond to the issues raised.

Shine have a booklet that can help you with information for
people struggling with abuse at home.
