The document discusses the SWAMP project, which develops and assesses an IoT-based smart water management platform for precision irrigation in agriculture. The SWAMP project focuses on pilots in Italy, Spain, and Brazil to test the platform in various crop types, countries, and climates. It also addresses challenges in EU-Brazil collaboration on joint research calls, emphasizing the need for real collaboration between partners in different continents and involvement of users in pilots.

3. The SWAMP Project
SWAMP develops and assesses an
IoT-based smart water management platform
for precision irrigation in agriculture
with a hands-on approach that focuses on
pilots in Italy, Spain and Brazil

4. Challenge & Novelty
1. Feasibility of IoT concepts and platforms to
smart water management in precision
agriculture
2. Scalable and flexible platform to be deployed in
various scenarios, crops, countries and climates
3. Smart algorithms for precision irrigation and
optimization of water distribution
4. Integration of heterogeneous sensors, including
drones
5. Four pilots, two in Brazil and two in Europe

Challenge & Novelty
6. EU-BR Joint Calls: Improving Collaboration
• Collaboration must be “for real”, i.e., partners must start
new collaborations with each other, particularly from
different continents
– Collaboration between EU and BR partners must be enforced in
various levels
– Collaboration should be a very important measure of success
• Distance impose difficulties for collaboration
– Measures must be taken to enforce such collaboration
– Longer term (>1 month) visits from EU and BR must be enforced
7/26/2018 SWAMP 6
7. EU-BR Joint Calls: inter-project collaboration
• Projects have deadlines and there is not enough resources
for doing much different research activities
• Collaboration with other projects (EU/BR or EU) might be in
the level or organizing joint events (workshops, etc.)
– Projects should be encouraged to promote joint activities/events
– Sharing results, expertise and lessons learned
– Promoting the reuse of solutions from other projects
• Calls on CSA (Coordination and Support Action) projects
– Ex: EUBrasilCloudForum
7/26/2018 SWAMP 7
8. Innovation & Market Strategies
• Projects must be encourage to consider the user needs since
the very beginning (since the proposal)
– “In order for innovation to work, the marketing department must
be involved since the beginning”
• BR-EU joint calls must have a focus on PILOTS with real users
and not only demos
– Provisions must be made to guarantee that the involvement of
users in pilots is “for real”
• In Brazil, companies must have an effective participation
– They do not receive funding, not even for attending meetings
