Charles Agustin de Coulomb was a French physicist born in 1736 who invented a sensitive instrument to measure electrical forces and investigated elasticity of metals and friction of machinery. He is known for Coulomb's law describing the electrical force between charged particles and the inverse square law relationship between the torque and angle of twist in an object.
