Dear Community,
First and foremost, I’d like to extend a hand of gratitude
for the support that our community gave ACCESS during
the holiday season. Our food and fundraising efforts
were successful because of generous people like you, our
corporate partners, and of course, the dedication of our
ACCESS staff. Thank you.
Last fall we revealed our 2022-2024 strategic plan,
including our updated guiding principles and strategic
roadmap. I’m pleased to report that we are building
momentum in this new year, and have started addressing
several initiatives, including diversity of funding sources,
implementing the Center for Community Resilience, and
strengthening support from state and local government
entities, among others.
I invite you to learn more about how these initiatives are
increasing our capacity to build community in Jackson
County in the following pages. I am proud of the work and
dedication of the ACCESS team in making these goals a
reality.
2022 is destined to be a year of collaboration, growth,
and service - none of which could be realized without our
community.

Wildfire Recovery
State and local organizations
working together to find housing
solutions for wildfire survivors
On January 31, 2022, representatives from state, local, and
private organizations gathered to celebrate the opening
of The Jackson - a renovated 84-unit affordable housing
community located in Medford, prioritizing the placement
of wildfire-affected households. With affordable housing
inventory at historically low levels, ACCESS’ Center for
Community Resilience (CCR) and partners are finding
creative solutions to establish long-term housing solutions
for those recovering from the 2020 wildfire disasters in our
community.
ACCESS plays a central role in helping local wildfire
survivors find housing solutions. Alongside Disaster Case
Managers from the State of Oregon and local organizations,
ACCESS helps those affected identify solutions to their
unique housing circumstances and needs. From short-
term sheltering to cash assistance for purchasing a
manufactured home and situations in between, ACCESS
and our partners are having to explore creative solutions to
a complex problem.
“Right now, one of our biggest hurdles is finding affordable
housing for larger families,” explains Matthew Havinear,
manager of the CCR. “We have been able to offer incentives
and benefits to private landlords to help house these
families, and we hope that more will step forward to help
our community.”
Both private and corporate landlords may be eligible for
benefits for housing fire-impacted families through the
CCR including complimentary renter’s insurance, tenant
education, security deposit payments, and direct rent
payments.

In the interest of safety and community care, ACCESS has
partnered with the City of Medford to open and operate the
Medford Severe Weather Shelter, a severe weather event
shelter to help unhoused neighbors in our community
during both low and high temperature events. The low-
barrier shelter provides overnight shelter, access to food
and warm beverages, a comfortable place to relax, and the
potential for service referrals.
This December, the shelter was open for 12 nights in which
the nightly temperature dipped below the temperature
threshold set by the City. Staffed by ACCESS, volunteers and
local partnering agencies, the shelter operated at capacity
on a nightly basis, highlighting the importance of services
such as this severe weather shelter. After the first few nights
of operation, it was clear that capacity needed to increase
to be able to serve more people.
Many volunteers expressed gratitude for being able to
connect with those utilizing the shelter. “I have to be
honest, I didn’t know what to expect,” shared a shelter
volunteer. “I was struck with how grateful everyone was for
a place to sleep and, for the most part, there was a sense of
calm and respect among everyone there. I am glad to have
been able to help.” Without the generosity and flexibility of
those who volunteered to staff the shelter overnight, the
shelter would not have been able to serve the amount of
people that it did.
Even with expanded operations, the shelter does not have
the capacity to meet the full scope of the need for secure
housing during severe weather events. ACCESS, the City of
Medford, and the Medford Fire Department all encourage
local organizations interested in opening their facilities
during severe weather events to contact Deputy Fire
Marshal Tanner Farrington at (541) 774-2300.

FOOD WARMTH SHELTER
One of ACCESS’ most popular programs, the Durable Medical Equipment (DME)
program, is partnering with local healthcare and assisted care facilities to reduce
barriers for obtaining medical equipment. Occupational therapy patients at Providence
Medford Medical Center, residents at various local assisted care facilities, and those
receiving home care from Signature Home Health utilize this program to augment their
healthcare needs.
The Durable Medical Equipment program allows residents to borrow equipment at no
cost. This program is supported through donations of funds and equipment and saved
the community over $1.5 million just last year!

Healthy Mobile Pantry expands operations, bringing fresh
and healthy food to even more communities!
Look for the ACCESS Mobile Pantry around Jackson County in new locations, such as
Prospect, Butte Falls, La Clinica, and Ashland. We think access to healthy food should
not be limited by geography!

FOOD PROGRAM BRIEFS
The ACCESS Food Program is excited to announce a new
partnership with the Rogue Powerpack Program (RPP)!
Together, we provide weekend food options to 350 food
insecure students throughout Jackson County in the Phoenix-
Talent, Eagle Point, and Medford School Districts.
For students who rely on school meals as one of their main
sources of nourishment, weekends can be a challenging time.
Food provided by the ACCESS/RPP partnership requires little
to no preparation so children can be in charge of their own
meals and snacks.
“Seeing kids’ faces light up as they leave school on Friday
with a bag full of food simply fills your heart up,” says
Michelle Corradetti, RPP co-president. “Their weekend is
brighter before they even get on the bus.”
In order to expand this program to serve more students, we
need your help. If you would like to volunteer to help pack
or deliver bags, please contact our volunteer coordinator
at volunteer@accesshelps.org. If you’d like to contribute
financially, please donate on our website and be sure to
designate funds to “Rogue Powerpack”.

The ACCESS Homeownership Center is Jackson County’s only HUD-approved housing counseling agency. We are
seeking mortgage and finance professionals who are wanting to connect with and help educate first-time home buyers
during our pre-purchase education and financial literacy classes. If you are interested in presenting, please fill out the

Energy assistance program warms
home and heart of local musician
When Don discovered that the furnace in his home had
stopped working during the coldest month of the year,
he wasn’t sure if he’d be able to afford a replacement.
The difficult choice of whether to spend money on daily
essentials or energy costs is an decision that many Rogue
Valley households are faced with making.
High energy bills can put a financial strain on households
and lead to painful trade-offs between paying energy
bills and other necessities like food and medicine. Many
households also may keep their homes at unhealthy or
unsafe temperatures to lower energy bills.

reached out to ACCESS for
assistance. Through the Energy
Program, ACCESS was able
to provide Don with a system
inspection and make a plan
for how to increase energy
efficiency and decrease energy
costs for the long-term.

“After Don contacted us, his
furnace was inspected and
deemed a total loss. Our amazing local HVAC partners
installed a new system in his house quickly, to keep Don
safe and healthy. The relief in Don’s voice was clear - he
wanted me to tell everyone at ACCESS how grateful he was!”
“You have made this old man cry,” said Don. “It’s so nice
to be warm again with a brand-new unit. I can’t thank you
enough for how quickly you worked.”
In addition to furnace repair and replacement, the ACCESS
Energy and Weatherization Assistance Program may be able
to help eligible households with:
• Energy bill payment assistance for an array of energy
sources
• Ceiling, wall, and floor insulation installation
• Energy-related home repairs
• Energy conservation education
• Air infiltration reduction
• Heating duct improvements

Carol Sparks, a dedicated monthly sustaining donor,
knows the impact that her recurring donations have in our
community. Over the course of six years, Carol has given 64
gifts to ACCESS, helping hundreds of residents receive food
and shelter.
When Carol’s good friend, Adele S. Bernett, passed away
in Tampa, FL, on October 19, 2021, she left $1,000 in her
Memorial Fund for Carol to gift to a local nonprofit of her
choice. Right away, Carol knew that would be ACCESS.
“ACCESS is a major go-to organization for assistance in
our community. I was happy to have this opportunity to
honor my decades of friendship with Adele by making a
meaningful contribution to ACCESS,” Carol says.
It is because of generous and caring people like Carol and
Adele that we can help all those who need us most. We are
humbled and grateful for their support.

responsible stewards of all donations
and gifts. The support and trust of our
donors is of utmost importance to us.
Unless directed to a specific program
by the donor, donations received
are allocated to programs serving
the needs of our community: food
& nutrition programs, housing
programs, energy assistance
programs, and wildfire relief. Many
programs are funded by grant funds,
with donations allowing ACCESS
flexibility to meet the unique needs
of our program participants. In 2021,
only 8% of ACCESS expenses were
overhead costs!
