2. This opening has a very
drawn out sinister feel to it.
The combination of the long
driving of the car, and the
repetitive music creates a
very surreal effect. The areal
shots easily show all of the
surrounding area and for a
long time there aren’t any
houses nor people showing
that the family in the car
are driving further and
further into the middle of
nowhere. This suggests that
the family are alone and
that if they got into any
trouble that no one will be
able to help them.
3. The repetitive music
following the car
journey is rather
scary and makes the
audience feel
uncomfortable and
on edge. This also
implies that
something bad will
happen and leaves
the audience in
anticipation as they
wait for it to
happen.
4. Thirdly while on the
long car journey the
question: “Where are
they going?” is asked by
the audience. After
driving for a long time
with no buildings
around you wouldn’t
expect to see the hotel
when the family parks
there. Also because of
the setup of the family
being alone, taking a
long journey into a
strange hotel with
sinister music the
audience very well
knows that the genre of
movie is a horror or
thriller.
