The goal is to promote the 
history and culture of African 
ethnic roots descendant of 
ethnicity and 
Traditions 
panama. 
Gain knowledge of how black 
was exploited and slaved, 
knowing the contributions 
brought to the country.
Black Ethnicity The contribution of black ethnicity 
was significant Panama during the 
construction of the railway and 
inter-oceanic canal, as well as music, 
dance, art and food, among other 
things. The complexes generated 
through the centuries, from the 
arrival of the first blacks to the 
Americas, bother some to recognize 
their black heritage. 
It was not until 1932 that blacks 
caused impact on policy when they 
could vote in elections where it won 
Harmodio Arias in 1932.
The valuable contribution of 
African slaves, free blacks to 
the development of colonial life 
in the Isthmus of Panama is 
important. 
African descent, it was forced, 
painful, cruel and inhumane, 
for the separation of families, 
the abuse of children in all jobs 
enslaved, impoverished 
nutrition, miserable barracks, 
the flogging with whips, the 
stocks, mutilations, hangings.
African slaves were the main 
workforce in the explorations in 
Darien, constructions in Nombre de 
Dios, Portobelo, Nata, Santiago, Parita, 
Tonosí, Los Santos, Montijo, Anton, 
Penonomé, Chorrera, Remedios, Sona, 
La Palma Tables and, above all, in the 
Very Noble and Loyal City of Panama: 
the strengths, the ports, the colonial 
government administrative buildings, 
convents, churches, mines, sawmills, 
and as mule train drivers , as divers in 
the pearl fisheries, agriculture, herds 
of cattle, the military and also in the 
cane fields and sugar mills.
In Latin America, the Panamanian folk music is 
known for its dances, movements of hands, feet 
and hip, and above all, the upbeat rhythms of 
drums: beats loudly marked by the African 
heritage. 
It is one of the most distinctive folk expressions and 
colorful province of Colon. 
The congo dance tradition emerged in the Atlantic, 
after the leak of blacks brought by European 
settlers.
