NURSING/MIDWIFERY SCHEME
A maximum of Five (05) CPF Fellows will be selected by Sanyu Africa Research Institute for submission into the
Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) Electronic Application System (EAS) in this round. These will be
nominated by the Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) to the CSC. The Fellowship’s primary objective is to
offer Nurses and midwives (practicing in the rural Uganda) the opportunity to spend 6-8 weeks in the United
Kingdom to undertake a structured Programme of Nursing and or midwifery care, non-clinical learning and
related activities. Each CPF supports individuals to travel to the UK, accommodation, a subsistence allowance,
and funding to support all learning activities. The CPF will take place between 15 April 2019 and 17 June 2019.
Eligibility Criteria
Candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements:
Essential (these criteria are essential for selection for this scheme):
Applicants will: -
1. Have been qualified as a midwife or nurse for a minimum of 5 years, having undertaken their
nursing/midwifery training at a recognised institution.
2. Have a valid practicing license from the Uganda Nurses and Midwifery council
3. Have proven excellent spoken and written English language skills
4. Have excellent computer skills including good working knowledge of MS Office
5. Be asked to share with the panel one area of improvement in nursing or midwifery practice that they
have contributed to and led to improved care of patients.
Desirable (would be an added advantage):
1. Currently working in with evidence of a significant contribution to the implementation of care or
research
2. Be asked to evidence any nursing or midwifery awards they have received.
3. Hold a valid passport

The Fellowship Selection Committee (consisting of representation from LJMU and SAfRI) welcomes
applications from interested qualified midwives and nurses. The following format must be followed.

2. Curriculum Vitae: a well written, up to date CV which must include, but not limited to, the
following

b. Academic qualifications to date
c. Employment held to date
d. Upto 5 professional qualifications obtained
e. Upto 5 short courses undertaken
f. Upto 4 examples of Voluntary activity
g. Membership of any professional bodies

2. 3. Home Country Benefit: Please provide:
a. Personal Statement (500 words Maximum): This should cover all of the following
i. Your demonstrated commitment to your professional field
ii. Your demonstrated desire and ability to attain or foster transferable skills of
benefit to your home facility, employer, SAfRI, Ministry of Health as well as to
Uganda
iii. How you will implement what you have learnt during the fellowship upon your
return to your employment
iv. What impact you expect your learning during the fellowship to have within your
own profession and within the Country
v. Which sustainable Development goal (SDG) your proposed fellowship

b. Objectives: List the main objectives for the fellowship and how will each of the objectives
be met by the fellowship Programme
i. Immediate (upto 4 objectives and the plan for each),

4. Key documents
a. Copies of the academic transcripts and Certificates,
b. Certificate of registration/ practicing license
c. Two Letters of Support: These should be from a) your current head of
Programme/section/ department and b) a commitment letter from your home
employer.
d. A copy of passport details page
Note that the above documents must be in Microsoft word or PDF only formats and any application
without any of those documents will be automatically considered ineligible. These documents
required for the initial selection process at SAfRI are also those that will be submitted to the CSC
and so must be of excellent quality.

November 2019 to complete the online CSc EAS Application up to 2nd
December 2018 in the SAfRI office, where a final decision will be made.
