Process for Reporting Damage From Winter Storm
The Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB), the City of Fairbanks, and the City of North Pole are
preparing to collect information from residents about damages their property received as a result of
the November 12, 2013 severe winter wind storm that left thousands of people without electricity.
FNSB Mayor Luke Hopkins said, “We Community Leaders are taking this preliminary step now
because our community may be eligible for state or federal funding.”
The Borough has created a webpage to gather information from area residents. The data will be
used to assess the damage caused by the storm. The Mayor reiterated that filling out the form is not
an application for assistance. “The information is going to provide us Community Leaders and
Emergency Managers with a better understanding of the affected areas,” he said. The local
governments will need to develop an estimate of the total uninsured damages in the community.
Once the information has been collected it will be sent to the State of Alaska Division of Homeland
Security and Emergency Management. If the Borough and cities of Fairbanks and North Pole are
eligible for assistance, residents will be required to apply directly to the State for the assistance at
that time. Further information will be provided as it becomes available.
