Music institutions are establishments like
record labels who fund their signed artists.
They will provide funding for music videos,
studio sessions etc.
The reason they do this is so that the public
can see the videos and hear the music and
eventually therefore will buy the music.
3. Sony Music
Sony Music Entertainment is one of the largest music companies in the
world at the moment.
It’s owned and controlled by the Sony Corporation of America.
There have been many name changes over the years, it has been
previously known as Columbia Records, Sony BMG, SME and was
founded originally as ARC in 1929.
It has many sub-labels and multiple divisions within the media industry, it
mostly specialises however in music and entertainment.
4. Universal Music Group (UMG)
Universal is the largest of the three major labels
It is owned by French media conglomerate Vivendi.
It, like Sony Music, has also had a few different names such as MCA
Music Entertainment Group, Polygram and was originally founded as
Decca Records USA.
They have a variety of headquarters based around America and even
some across seas, some places include the UMG Main Global
Headquarters in Santa Monica, the UMG International is in London.
5. Warner Music Group (WMG)
Warner Music Group is the largest American-owned, but the third largest
music conglomerate in the world.
It was previously owned by Time Warner, the world’s biggest media
conglomerate however after being sold it’s now owned by Access
Industries based in America.
The company operates a few of the worlds biggest recording labels such
as Warner Bros. Records, Parlophone Records and Atlantic Records.
