2. WHAT IS FAS? Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a term that describes a wide range of effects that can occur in an individual who was exposed to alcohol during pregnancy. (These effects may include physical, mental, behavioral, and cognitive disabilities which last a lifetime. FASD itself is not a diagnostic term, but rather an umbrella term under which four specific medical diagnoses can be made. 3. ONSET/PREVALENCE Studies by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have shown that 0.2 to 1.5 cases of FAS occur for every 1,000 live births in the United States. Other studies using different methods have estimated the rate of FAS at 0.5 to 2.0 cases per 1,000 live births. There are at least four times as many cases of FASDs as FAS.
