videos to support the points below. His theory revolves around the structure of music
videos.
1. They follow theverse/chorus structure of thesong

Assign 24: Carol Vernallis theory
Her theory revolves around 4 concepts:
Editing, Camera movement and Framing, Narrative & Diegesis
(copy the following written points ina blogpost andhave a screen grabs from one (or more)
music video tosupport points)
1) Usual rules of continuityediting are brokento draw attention to what is on
screen
2) Edits canbe done reallyobviouslyandnoticeablyto draw attentionto
themselves such as wipes and special effects
3) Jump cuts are oftenused
4) A base-track master shot is frequentlyusedto give the videostructure
5) The camera moves or sways in time to the music
6) Speedof edit is manipulated – be it speeded upor slowed down
7) MV’s are not always balancedbetweennarrative andperformance
8) MV’s don’t always have a narrative resolutionat the end
9) MV’s often pose questions in the narrative that are not answeredwithin the
video
