2. Think about it:
Having a million dollars in the bank is only
proof of success; if one of your goals is to
amass riches.
If your goal is to practice acts of charity,
then keeping the money for yourself is
suddenly contrary to how you would define
success.

Editor's Notes
IS
This session is about understanding Goal Setting…
If you want to succeed, you need to set goals.
Without goals you lack focus and direction.
Idea of goal setting:
The car is packed and you’re ready to go, your first ever cross-country trip. From the White Mountains of New Hampshire to the rolling hills of San Francisco, you’re going to see it all.
You put the car in gear and off you go. First stop, the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.
A little while into the trip you need to check the map because you’ve reached an intersection you’re not familiar with. You panic for a moment because you realize you’ve forgotten your map.
But you say the heck with it because you know where you’re going. You take a right, change the radio station and keep on going. Unfortunately, you never reach your destination.
Explain:
Too many of us treat goal setting the same way. We dream about where we want to go,but we don’t have a map to get there.
What is a map? In essence, the written word.
What is the difference between a dream and a goal? Once again, the written word.
But we need to do more than simply scribble down some ideas on a piece of paper. Ourgoals need to be complete and focused, much like a road map.
Why do we need to set goals?
Take suggestions from the audience & jot it down on the board

Give directions
Energize
Provide challenge

Live Your Best Life
Choice: goals narrow attention and direct efforts to goal-relevant activities, and away from perceived undesirable and goal-irrelevant actions.
Effort: goals can lead to more effort; for example, if one typically produces 4 widgets an hour, and has the goal of producing 6, one may work more intensely towards the goal than one would otherwise.
Persistence: Someone becomes more prone to work through setbacks if pursuing a goal.
Cognition: Goals can lead individuals to develop and change their behavior.
Activity: Creating a MIND MAP…
What is a mind map?
A mind map is an awesome visual tool that can help you to:
Clarify your ideas
Define your goals
Spark your creativity
Renew your sense of purpose
rejuvenate your zest for life
Mind maps are a way of organizing your thoughts.Basically, a map is a visual representation of a place, specifying noteworthy elements. A mind map therefore depicts the contents of your mind. One of most popular mind map uses is to create a mind map about your goals. This allows you to articulate your goals, put them down on paper, and see how they are interconnected.
You can mind map about immediate goals (such as daily tasks or an elaborate to-do list) or mind map about long-term goals that extend far into the future.
When you're done, you will have a beautiful mind map that you can hang on your wall in your studio or in your workplace, tape inside your sketchbook, or place anywhere that will allow you to see it every day.
By visualizing your goals, you can help center your energy and focus your intentions on what you want to do or achieve
Your mind map can look like anything you want it to!Typically, mind maps start in the center with the main theme and emanate outwards. Thoughts and ideas branch outwards from the central point.Often, mind maps are readable and understandable only to the person who created it. And that's totally fine!
Setting goals the SMART way…
Set Specific Goals:
Your goal must be clear and well defined. Vague or generalized goals are unhelpful because they don't provide sufficient direction. Remember, you need goals to show you the way. Make it as easy as you can to get where you want to go by defining precisely where you want to end up.
Set Measurable Goals:
Include precise amounts, dates, etc in your goals so you can measure your degree of success. If your goal is simply defined as "To reduce expenses" how will you know when you have been successful? In one month's time if you have a 1% reduction or in two years' time when you have a 10% reduction? Without a way to measure your success you miss out on the celebration that comes with knowing you have actually achieved something.
Set Attainable Goals:
Make sure that it's possible to achieve the goals you set. If you set a goal that you have no hope of achieving, you will only demoralize yourself and erode your confidence.
However, resist the urge to set goals that are too easy. Accomplishing a goal that you didn't have to work hard for can be anticlimactic at best, and can also make you fear setting future goals that carry a risk of non-achievement. By setting realistic yet challenging goals, you hit the balance you need. These are the types of goals that require you to "raise the bar" and they bring the greatest personal satisfaction.
Set Relevant Goals
Goals should be relevant to the direction you want your life and career to take. By keeping goals aligned with this, you'll develop the focus you need to get ahead and do what you want. Set widely scattered and inconsistent goals, and you'll fritter your time – and your life – away.
Set Time-Bound Goals
You goals must have a deadline. Again, this means that you know when you can celebrate success. When you are working on a deadline, your sense of urgency increases and achievement will come that much quicker.
Ways to set goals…
Differentiate between Long Term and Short TermThe most important thing is to understand the difference between a long term and a short term goal and then lay down both. A long term goal is something which you wish to achieve over a period of 10 years. Short term ones are those which are stepping stones towards that final step you want to achieve. As such, short term goals can be daily, monthly and yearly. All these short term goals should be such that they somehow contribute to the final, long term goal.
Think Things ThroughNow that you know the difference between long term and short term goals, one of the most important tip for college students and adults is thinking about what they do wish to achieve in the short and the long run. They can be of all types - personal, professional, physical, educational, financial etc. Set a reasonable and achievable long term benchmark. Break up your long term plan into short periodically defined steps.
Make a scheduleOne of the simplest, yet very important ways for kids is to make a schedule listing the goals to be achieved. Making a schedule and pinning it in a very visible place in your room will help you remember what your goals are and help you achieve them. Otherwise, there are chances that you will lose focus from your goals and forget about them and procrastination sets in. Hence, it is important that you make a schedule and work accordingly.
Assess your performanceOne of the important business goals is to assess your progress. Sometimes, you may unknowingly set some rather lofty targets for yourself which you will find very difficult to achieve. Hence, it is important that you take stock of your achievements till date and then monitor your progress. If you feel that the goals you set for yourself were too tough, then revise them. If you think they're too easy, even then it is important that you revise those and make them a bit more challenging.
Rewards YourselfAfter achieving all these little strides with success, give yourself a little reward. Suppose you're on a diet and you follow it regularly for a week, then take the Sunday off and give yourself a little treat. This will help you keep going and continue your progress and enhance positive thinking. Giving yourself that little treat can really provide the required motivation to achieve your short term goals.
