A presentation of the public art proposal for the Evergreen transit extension of the Skytrain line in the Vancouver, BC lower mainland. Below is the discussion detailing our statement: What is the story of Coquitlam? What is the story of a Skytrain user? How do we facilitate a connection between the two? The Evergreen concept and Natural Connections are themes in this project: the addition of a new transit route; the building and strengthening of community; with successful transit our time frees up to develop and sustain connections. Our engagement with the Evergreen Project is layered: • Commuters start as transit users and through time, evolve into owners that care for and nurture their environment. • Connections drive us to make sense of a location's identity. We propose a combination of two units. The glass based mosaic unit represents the Evergreen concept. The circular pavement mosaic unit discusses connections between natural resources and our ways in life. The vertical and ground components complement each other as a system yet could each stand on their own. Our vertical glass mosaic component will serve as the marker of the place. It will look like a big green explosion while still glow as a tree canopy. In this piece you will be able to see the light passing through the glass, the glass piece itself, the light falling from it depending on the time of day. At ground level, the mosaic piece will reflect in part the glass tree design. The salmon stream and train tracks withhold a journey of questions that lead us through a story. Follow the patterns of this imaginary landscape and immerse yourself in its connections to you, to your environment. In nature every thing is connected. Natural resources that become manufactured goods require a fine balance between needs and desires. In Coquitlam we find inspiration in the interrelated stories of the waterways; the Fraser Mills history; gravel that comes from the ground and supports the railway tracks: such stories inform much of the way we, as a society engage in urban development today. With both art pieces you will be able to contemplate the meaning they have for you. Your experience of the art starts on location yet continues wherever you go. Developing a new line of rail transport is an opportunity on a social scale to examine our ways. Today's scarcity of resources and abundance of knowledge, instead of posing restrictions, allow us to calculate our moves for the benefit of our generation and the ones following us. Our art will be there to welcome its viewers to this place. We hope to provide a concise perspective and inspire engagement in thought. For this we are grateful to be part of this project.
