Having purchased numerous brands over the years I have a good feel for those that seem to be more affordable, and more reliable. When shopping for a computer, it can become over whelming , as you become smothered by an avalanche of information and numbers. How many gigabytes do I need; what software program should my machine run on; how much RAM and Hard Drive space do I need?
1. SIMPLE SOLUTION: which computer to buy

Deciding which computer to buy can seem to be an overwhelming
task.
Several weeks ago a friend of mine called me and said he was looking for a new computer and
asked me which ones I thought were the best.
I am no expert when it comes to
computers, but have been using them
since the first Mac Plus computers hit
the market. These were the small 8”
screen, black and white only
computers that didn’t even have a
hard disk. You literally had to save
your files to a floppy disk having very
limited storage capacity.

shopping for a computer, it can

of information and numbers. How many gigabytes do I need; what software program should my
machine run on; how much RAM and Hard Drive space do I need?
There is one simple answer to this question: Don’t worry about it.
The fact is the computer world is now a place where no matter which computer you choose, all
the numbers will satisfy most of your complex issues. RAM, processor, hard drive, graphics card,
for almost all users, in most all computers will have enough capacity for all your computing needs.
It’s kind of like buying a car. You get in front of it, you feel it, you test drive it. Most all cars will now
do the same thing…get you down the road effectively. This is what you need to do when
purchasing a computer.
Which computer best fits your scope of work.
Go to a brick-and-mortar store and test drive computers, instead of buying sight-unseen from
website.
Get a feel for the keyboard, and the quality of the
screen. If you find one that’s a good fit, surf the
internet to find the best deal. Once you decide, make
sure you will have the service and support you
expect, as there will always be issues regarding the
necessity to add new programs, updates, back up
procedures, etc. There will always come a day when
an outside IT service technician will be necessary and
it can be a harrowing experience if you have no back
up servicing plan.
3. Should it be a MAC or PC? A lot of Graphic
Designers lean towards the MAC. As far as graphic
design is concerned, there is no significant difference
in the software available for the Mac or PC. All of the
major applications, including the Adobe Creative Suite, are developed for both platforms. Because
the Mac is often considered the designer’s computer, there are some handy tools and applications
that are Mac-only. Overall, there is more software available for the PC, especially if you are
focused on a particular industry, gaming or 3-D renderings (such as for architecture).
Several years after purchasing MACS for my Graphic Design business, we found it to be true that
all the software MAC was using was now available for the PC…and a lot cheaper. My daughter
always had me purchase MAC laptops for her college days. I found that when they needed to be
serviced, it was necessary to take them to a proprietary MAC store for servicing, with hourly rates
higher than that of a service technician for PCs.
Generally, “MACS” are mentioned in the same sentence as “graphic design,” and rightfully so for
their excellent graphics and font capabilities, and ease of use. The drawback of the Apple used to
be the price, but if you do want a MAC and are tight on budget consider the “consumer” level iMac,
which is powerful enough for graphic design tasks, or a refurbished model. In the end, especially
when starting out, you will probably do just as well with a PC.
With some smart shopping you can get a powerful one for less money than a Mac, and you will be
using the same design software… your creativity, and not the cost of your computer, will
determine the outcome of your work.
As a result, In my graphic design business, we slowly changed over toe PCs and continued to find
that hardware and software purchases were much cheaper than any MAC products. There was
also better availability of service tech for PCs than MACS, which made servicing more affordable.
Of course, you do have the “die-hard” designer who always chooses a MAC over a PC just
because of the Graphic Design industry’s eccentric, egotistical ways.
4. Keep in mind that the new Ultra-Thin MACS do not have hard drives. Because they are so thin,
there is no room for this type of installation. These have solid state drives, with long battery lives
and are less sluggish than computers with moving parts. So if you want to watch DVDs, you will
need a laptop, or desktop computer with an optical drive.
MACS are sleek, PCs are everywhere. So when it comes to a choice, it may just be that you have
worked in an office that most of the time uses PCs, or MACS. You might want to stick with what
you already know.
