 Topic sentence
   Main idea
   Complete sentence: S + V + C.
   Topic and controlling idea
 topic                          controlling idea
English has almost become an international language.
   General statement (not specific details)

 Supporting sentences
   Explain or prove the topic sentence.
   Use specific details: facts, statistics,
    examples or quotations
  e. g.

  More than 70 percent of the world’s mail is
     written in English.
  It is the primary language on the Internet.
  In international business, it is used more
     than any other language.
Parts of a Paragraph
 Concluding sentence
   End of the paragraph
   Most important ideas to remember
       Summarizing the main points
       Repeating the topic sentence in other words
  e. g.
  Therefore, it is a useful language to know.
