Design & Manufacture (Glasgow) project in which we redesigned the Accuhaler which is used to deliver medication for COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). The aim was to make it reusable and cheaper to manufature.
Prohaler's design team comprises: Uvarajan M V; Tong Jing Kai; Jeremy Seah, Wang Cong, Vaizhnavi

Prohaler - Re-Designed Accuhaler
1. Design & Manufacture 3G (OIP)
By Group H (2013):
Uvarajan M Velayutham;Tong Jing Kai; Jeremy Seah;Wang Cong;Vaizhnavi Chelvaraja
2. Accuhaler is being used as a means to deliver
the dry powder medication required to
prevent COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary
Disease).
The current design being manufactured by
Glaxo Wellcome Ptd Ltd, UK is:
Very complex to manufacture
Expensive
Cannot be reused.
13. Design: Based on correction tape
cartridge replacement method. The
3 gears within drives the
mechanism
Description: This design consist of
7 main parts. The critical parts will
consist in the cartridge which the
user disposes and replaces every
month.
Evaluation: The wastage of
material when replacing cartridge
is only reduced. User-friendly in
terms of replacing new medication.
14. Design: The original concept of using the
round magazine was streamlined into a
sleeker storage unit. The main working
principle still remains.
Description: 5 main parts with the critical
parts are the cutter and the top cover.
Evaluation: The cutter design on this
concept is not easy to manufacture and the
product was assembly unfriendly. Further
exploration has to be made if this design
was to be chosen.

18. ≈ 95mm
For the mouth piece size, the team decided to take references
of the straw diameter size from Macdonald’s (as the minimum
range) and the current Accuhaler mouthpiece dimensions (as
the maximum range). (Top)
Tried holding prototype (left) among ourselves and found
it to be comfortable to hold
19. Design for Embedded Carbon Recycled materials will be used for packaging
Design for Recyclability majority of the product will be using the same
material making it easier to recycle
Design for Transport Efficiency Smaller product packaging allows more
products to be packed on pallets
Design for longevity By allowing the product to be reused we will be
decreasing the products thrown away after use
20. Criteria for the material selection:
Medical grade approved
Adequate supply of raw material
Low cost for mass manufacture to be affordable
Able to maintain the physical and chemical properties when the
product under 100+ degree steam environment for the disinfection &
sterilization purpose, and able to serve the function under -0 degree
environment for outdoor conditions.
Light weight with high yield strength
30. The figure above
shows that the
prototype is
approximately the
length of a pen.
31.
32. Fill time for half
the product is
1.03secs. Cooling
time is 98secs. The
clamp open time is
5secs. The cycle time
is 102secs.
Air traps are
found around the
corners of the part
but not major.
The quality prediction
is 66.3% high and 33.7%
medium. The team
suspects this is due to the
thicker region around the
yellow parts. There may
be quality problems
Weld lines are seen
scattered around the part.
However, these are only
formed in the indents
which forms the grip for
the cover.
33. The drop test carried out on the storage tube.
It can be seen that the thin regions of the part
at the bottom of the part is the contact plane for
the drop test.
It is still in the green zone which is below the
material’s failure limit.
