The Salt Works of Chaux in Arc-Senans, France was designed by Claude Nicholas Ledoux in the 18th century to have very little ornamentation and a low pediment with overbearing columns that hid the porch, leaving an ominous feeling for visitors. It was significant as one of the first architect-designed industrial buildings that expressed the grim nature of salt-trading during that era.
