 Hydrocarbons will remain essential to
sustainable global economic
development and prosperity for decades
to come. Yet meeting the world’s growing
need for energy must be reconciled with
security of energy supply and
environmental protection.

USE FROM PRODUCTION TO CONSUMER

4. Facts about oil and gas
industry energy efficiency
Production efficiency: Saving energy along the
supply chain:
 more efficient exploration
 energy systems management
 co-generation of heat and power and the
recovery of waste heat from production units
using heat exchange
 improved process operations
 Improved Refinery processes
 high-pressure pipelines

5. Consumers efficiency
 18% of energy is consumed in the
production of fuels, the remaining 82% is
consumed by end-use.
 10% improvement in the efficiency of oil
use in transport and other end uses would
save the equivalent of one-half of all the
energy used by the oil and gas industry
worldwide.

6. Well toWheels initiative
 The Well-to-Wheels initiative has helped establish
the impact of different fuels and vehicle engines.
Developed jointly by the:
 oil industry research body CONCAWE
 the European Council for Automotive R+D and the
European Commission’s Joint Research Centre.
 Well-to-Wheels calculates the energy use and
greenhouse gas emissions associated with
different fuels and powertrains, and the
associated costs and benefits.

they will:
 Reduce USA Annual Energy End-Use 23% until

avoid the release of 1000 Gigatones of Green
House Emissions
